Forgive me in advance....I saw "Hairspray" tonight...
Edited on Wed Jul-25-07 01:20 AM by southlandshari
I know there are probably a dozen or more threads about the movie already here, but I've lost my donor star (for now) and can't search on topics. I'll get that star back at some point, but for now I've gained a tremendous sense of happiness and peace since taking a new job that pays a third of my old salary, so the tradeoff is worth it in my book.

:)

I took my eight-year-old daughter to see the remake of "Hairspray" at the local cinema tonight and I absolutely LOVED that movie. Infectious, feel-good, formulaic and all of that....it was GREAT!!!

Anyone else love it as much as we did?

If I'm way late to the party, links to old threads are much appreciated, if nothing else.

1. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Actually, except for Radio Lady's review of same, I haven't seen any posts on this topic. It's all Harry Potter around here the past few days.

2. Really?
I'm surprised there hasn't been more chatter about it here, especially since I know there are a lot of parents here in the DU Lounge who, like me, crave movies like this for their kids.

There is a very strong pro-integration message in the movie, not to mention the underlying theme of the whole film, that anyone can feel good about themself, anyone can make a difference...no matter their size, shape or circumstance in reality.

The singing and dancing in the film are enough to make the Grinch himself tap his foot, and the positive energy of the movie is something that can bond any parent and their child in smiles and hugs when the credits roll. That's what happened in my case, anyway.

Sheesh. Maybe me and Little Scout are the exception to the rule, here. Didn't anyone else see and/or enjoy "Hairspray" in the last few days?

Here's another thread that mentions Hairspray:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=6749418

You can see it got lots of replies. :P

edit: and Radio Lady's review, which did get replies.

7. I agree completely with Radio Lady's review
I'm going to stick to this thread, since hers devolved far too quickly - and through no fault of the OP - into stupidity that had nothing to do with the movie.

See the movie. Yes, it is truer to the broadway musical than the original movie (both of which I love). But what the naysayers seem to forget is that John Waters wouldn't have agreed to a cameo if he didn't approve of the film. Rickie Lake, the original Tracy Turnblatt, wouldn't have turned up at the end of this movie as a Phillip Morris agent, if she didn't approve of the film. And talented, thinking actors like Christopher Walken, John Travolta and Queen Latifa wouldn't lend their talents to this project if it wasn't worth at least a look.

This isn't the DU I know. The DU I know is full of real people, not just internet cynics. I don't mind if some scoff at the movie (usually without setting foot in any mainstream cinema in recent memory) but I will be honestly surprised if no one else has seen this gem of a movie. If they - you - have, I'll bet you left smiling, too!

Call me pollyanna, if you must.

This is, it more and more frequently seems, not the DU you know. This DU sucks rather vigorously, too much of the time.

But I like your analysis, so I guess there's hope.... :D

11. I haven't seen Hairspray
in any of its incarnations. But, actually, I think I probably will see this version.

I really am learning to dance (see my other post) and I do like musicals, though I often forget that, so I ought to like this one, at least the singing and dancing parts.

Thanks pollyanna :pals:

Bump "Hairspray" to the top of your list. Please. There is no one among us who couldn't use the boost that this sweet remake offers. And I KNOW you would enjoy it, darlin'!!

:)

For the rest of you, check your cynicism at the door and enjoy what really could be.

(ok, except for the singing and dancing parts. we might be able to integrate television and accept people of all sizes, but no use holding our breath for a society in which everyone sings like an angel and dances like a showgirl. sheesh!)

8. Checking my cyicism
but holding out for the dancing part, at least.

I'm learning to dance. Ballroom, of course. It's no good dancing unless one can do those sweeping across 'the stage' type moves. My long-term goal is to be able to dance through the stores and malls so as to reduce the drudgery and overall greyness of shopping.

Fox trotting through frozen foods. Waltzing with my cart through canned goods. I have to practice twirling the cart, though. Last time, I knocked over a display, and they won't let me shop there any more. :P

Southlandshari, I have missed you so much!

In the meantime, I haven't seen the movie as of yet, but we saw the musical before it went to Broadway. There wasn't one person in their seat during the last song, because they were all too busy dancing in the aisles! I can't wait to see it again!

MWAH, and MWAH to your little angel, too!

15. Things are going okay
I'm looking forward to hearing how you're doing!

Okay, here's what's up with me: Mr. JulieRB switched jobs, and is quite happy about it. I closed the yarn shop. I've written three single title contemporary romance novels in the past year and a half, and I'm finishing up the fourth. I met with an agent last week that asked me for the full book, so I'm hoping she will want to sign me as a client. We loved each other.

Of course, I am still carrying a torch for America's Hottest Prosecutor. Little does he know that if he only knew me, he'd LOVE me.

Other than that, things are quiet. ;-)

What be new?

14. Hi... Chiming in here...
Edited on Wed Jul-25-07 02:11 AM by colinmom71
Yes! I loved the movie version of the musical of "Hairspray"!! Such a great, feel-good film for all ages, which is rather an achievement these days.

Seriously, I think I had perma-grin throughout the whole film... Which for me these days is rather miraculous.

Nikki Blonsky was simply perfect as Tracy. And Travolta was really good as Edna. I'm not a Travolta fan by any means, but I kept forgetting it was he who was playing Tracy's mom. The whole cast was spot on, and while I missed some of the more elaborate staging of the musical numbers from the Broadway version, the film is somewhat simplified visually and it works beautifully. This "Hairspray" has earned and deserved every glowing review it has received.

And yes, I am also guilty of tapping toes through the last musical number! ;-)

um....er....I know I'm not around so much these days, but I'm hoping some of the old-timers around here will tell you not to be a'skeered of me and my effusive e-hugs here...

Truthfully, I loved your post and the fact that you saw - and genuinely enjoyed - the movie. I thought it was simply spot on in every way. I suppose if I watched it ten times and was given the assignment to critique it's flaws, I could come up with something, but this story (from the original by Waters to Broadway to today's incarnation) was never meant to be something enjoyed only by a few or some exclusive club of the elite. It is a story that does - as it absolutely should - appeal to everyone. Young, old, black, white, fat, skinny and every other demographic out there in which hope still exists.

But there I go being Pollyanna again. I dare any self-proclaimed Grinch to see the film and walk out of the theater with a frown on his or her face.

There. Consider my little old gauntlet...thrown!
