Take some injury, add some insult and then a whole bag of salt and rub it in with some lemon juice
I, Connonym, am a fuck up. I have made some of the most stupid financial decisions in the past couple years and I know I was wrong. I'm losing my house right now as a result. Everything I've worked for my whole life is in that house. Every penny I was worth is in that house -- including the contents of my 401k. The market right now sucks and I've given up on seeing a penny of my supposed (considerable) equity returned. I can't even sell it on a short sale. So I'm willing to suck it up, I'm willing to admit that it was my own personal poor choices that made this happen. It hurts and I'm heart broken but I'm a fighter and I want to move on with my life. BUT life won't let you move on. You make one mistake and it's like the first domino in a chain you didn't even know was there. Now I can't pass the credit check to get a new place. Through the grace of a god I don't believe in I'm living with family and it's miserable but it's better than a cardboard box. Now's when the salt gets rubbed into the wounds and then some lemon juice poured on top for good measure. I get my annual car/homeowners insurance policy renewal in the mail. I find I'm now being given a surcharge for "financial instability" When I got my credit card annual renewal statements they had upped my interest rate to 29% because I'm now a poor credit risk. I'm already struggling and corporate America has to take advantage and make it worse. Again, I admit it, I SCREWED UP, mea culpa, but can't a girl get a fucking break? Will they make it so that I have absolutely no dignity for the rest of my life?

Thank you for allowing me the forum for this whining session. I'm feeling pretty fucking discouraged. There apparently aren't any second chances allowed in America. Unless you're a policeman or an aristocrat (and I really need to stop listening to the Clash because it only makes me more bitter).

1. I'm sorry.
It really does seem like the business world just LOVES to kick you when you're down and then put the boot on your throat and hold you there.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. Vent away. Any time.

4. I wish I had words to give real help, but
you have my deepest sympathies, you're going through a deep fear of mine, I'm always afraid my decisions will lead me into the same kind of situation. I know it sounds trite but these things once lived through can and will make you stronger...my best wishes, get through it, learn and live life as best you can, that's all you can do.

5. Connonym, I'm sorry things are sucko, right now.
I've never owned a house, but I can only imagine
how hard it must be to lose it.

And yeah, those predatory credit card companies really
hit you hard when you're down and out!

I remember that from when I had to file a BK, many years ago.

Hang in there.

Things will turn around for you.

6. Oh, man, don't I know what that feels like!
I'm so sorry - you're right. It's like clawing out of a deep well with slippery sides. And there is absolutely no sympathy or understanding.

Now if you were a head of a corporation and you made a series of catastrophic financial mistakes that cost the company and their investors billions of dollars and put thousands of people out of their jobs, you'd get a tidy severance package and a golden parachute.

Great priorities, huh?

Be strong.

7. Hang in there!
As a former 2-time homeowner now living in a room in my parents's house, I know how you feel - my mistake was dealing with a spousal illness, cost me everything (including the spouse). So, pretty much washed out 15 years of careful saving/progress. But you know what? I'll be fine. I'm healthy, and as long as I have that, I'll cut my losses and move on. Do what you can to get yourself out of your financial mess but don't beat yourself up too bad. Sometimes, life can be very unfair but none of us are entitled to anything so cherish what you do have :)

11. Hugs to all of you and a big thank you
I don't like to whine about it because it's my own fault. It means a lot to me that none of you smacked me down with that old "it's your own fault" chestnut.

12. that sucks!
grr! I hate - HATE - how they charge you more when you can least afford it. And those that could afford to pay get a break. Yeah - that's fair....

I had a similar thing happen a few years ago on a smaller scale: a layoff which lead to credit surcharges which lead to a car repo (when I had 2 payments left!), which eventually lead to me spending years to climb out of the hole, and the hole was pretty small until they started charging me for being in that hole.

Ugh. Anyway, good luck! You can do it.

13. I think universal default is one of the sickest things in our credit system
You mess up on one loan, and then every other creditor - even the ones where you've never missed a payment for years and years - jacks your rate and treats you like a deadbeat. Bunch of vultures...

I'm sorry you're going through this...

14. Sometimes you try to do the right thing
then bad luck or whatever beyond your control happens and it doesn't pan out.

Don't know what else to say or do but give a hug.
