I was diagnosed with cancer yesterday

I posted a few weeks ago that they found blood in my urine during my routine 50 year check up. Well it wasn't good. Saw the doctor yesterday and he told me the worse possible news. I have renal cancer. One kidney with an 8cm solid mass, no vascular involvment, no lymph involvment. Its big but is still encapsulated in the kidney. I'll have to either get the whole kidney removed or a partial. That will be up to the surgeon. We're working on that now.

how is your support system?

my wife,daughter and in-laws are here. My son said he can fly down when needed. My wife has been involved in cancer research for years and my brother-in-law is an MD. I'm going to be flooded with information.

when Mrs Matcom was diagnosed I flooded myself with info. day and night and it wasn't healthy for ME at all.

you concentrate on what the docs tell you and save your strength. let others gather the info. you have ONE JOB ONLY now and that is to kick this shit.

Can't stop them and I know its because they care.

I was told years ago that I had cancer and panicked at first, then after talking to knowledgable people realized I was probably in no life threatening condition, and here I am 39, whew, years later. Even had radiation and such. Those were in the pre-historic days. Keep those positve thoughts. You sound like you are handling it quite well, considering. A positive attitude is important.

I couldn't get into Hopkins for a consult until 8/9 but still have that as an option.

My concern is that its large and right now has no vascular involvment. Waiting too long may change that which would be disasterous.

I had my nephrectomy 2 years ago. No problems, no recurrence at this point. It was all in the capsule. I had a total. I'll be glad to share my experience, it was very positive. I rarely think about it now.

I was diagnosed with bladder cancer last fall after experiencing the same symptom. It's such a shock to be told that and I just want you to know that there are lots of people here if you ever want to talk, either in the Lounge or in the Cancer Support Group. did you notice any other symptoms before your checkup?

I have a lot of joint pain from being over active but nothing that would indicate this. I had a very minor trace of blood in the urine, nothing visible. I was expecting that they would only find stones or an infection.

My mother-in-law got good news today: Her biopsy for breast cancer was negative for the big C. We are all very relieved.

The good news is that it is encapsulated with no lymph involvement, and that you can be perfectly fine with one or one and a half kidneys.

My sister is currently being treated for her second bout of breast cancer. I don't know exactly how you feel, but I think I understand some of the fear, confusion, anxiety, anger, etc. you may be going through and you will be in my thoughts. The cancer support group here at DU is a great resource.

Though its terrible news to get, its good that its encapsulated w/ no lymph involvement. You can do fine w/ one kidney, and IIRC risk of recurrence is pretty low.

Good luck on your surgery, etc. Hope you have health insurance!

I feel somewhat guilty for my good news today. My ultra sound results came back showing normal today. I just wish you could have gotten better news (far better) too. :-(

My 40 year old sister-in-law had the same
problem 2 years ago. . .

They removed one kidney, and she is FINE
and dandy today. Of course, she has to
watch herself and keep up with tests, etc.,....

but she is CANCER FREE and right as rain!

Please start taking Turmeric. I know that you will most likely hear tons of information about natural treatments. I can tell you that I look into things that are either presented by people whom I respect and/or things that just make sense.

Everything at PubMed is peer reviewed so you can pretty much trust what is being said even though much most people can't understand what is being said I trust the "conclusion" part of the abstracts.

I have a sort of network that includes people who I consider very well respected scientists. They sent me some research on Turmeric a few months back and I forwarded the information to everyone in my email list because I thought it was that good. I also went right out and bought some and have been taking it every since.

Also I did a GOOGLE search and there are tons of sites about it although some doctors might pooh pooh them because they are not attached to scientific peer reviews studies. But the ones at Pubmed are so I trust these one.

It sounds like your prognosis is pretty good with the cancer being localized. I'm nearing the end of radiation treatment following lumpectomy for breast cancer now. A cancer diagnosis is not necessarily the end of the world.
