Anyone ever drive US 395 north of San Bernadino...
Up to CA Hwy 58?

Am asking because a friend of mine is driving from Tucson to visit me here in central CA, and am about to give her directions.

I usually take the I-215/I-15 at San Bernadino up to Barstow to catch Hwy 58. But, in looking at a map, I think she can save some miles (maybe time?) taking US 395 at Hesperia and up to the 58.

Since I've never taken that part of 395, I don't know if staying on the Interstate is faster, or if taking the 395, (I think it's a 2-lane) will make for better time...

And, if anyone knows, does does the 395 climb up, over, and down into the Mojave like I-215/I-15?

Anyone?

11. Yeah, only time I was near there was when we were driving here for the move
We took I-15 from Vegas to CA 91 near Riverside to CA 55 to I-5.

6. We were somewhere around Barstow
on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like, "I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive... "And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about 100 miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming: "Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?"

22.  (Swatting the air) Huh! Huh! Huh! Fucking pigs.
Dr. Gonzo: Did you say something?
Raoul Duke: Hm? Never mind. It's your turn to drive.
Raoul Duke: No point in mentioning these bats, I thought. Poor bastard will see them soon enough.

Just pump them tires up to 125 psi, turn on the heater to 'roast', and let 'er rip

Almost brought me to tears. My grandmother used to grow them in her front yard and I haven't seen one since she passed.

12. They can go through Keene and Tehachapi which is a lovely forested area
It's the extreme southern end of the Sierra Nevada range and it's not as densely forested as the northern areas but still very pretty. The big disadvantage is driving through the desert at this time of year - blazingly hot. They should leave San Berrnardino at the crack of dawn, to get out of the desert before the heat of middday.

14. Hi there!
My friend is driving out of Tucson around 3 AM to beat the heat and the monsoon cloud gathering.

She will be taking Hwy 58 through Tehachapi to get to CA 99 to come on up to my place .
Agreed! The drive throught he hills in Tehachapi area is beautiful. I always stop there for a quick rest and bite to eat just to enjoy the peacefulness of the place.

Anyway, having taken the drive between Tucson and central CA more times than I can count, have always taken I-215/I-15 as the connection between Hwy. 58 and I-10 to avoid going through LA and having to drive over the Grapevine on I-5. But, in looking at the map, was thinking that if she took US 395 at Hesperia and up to Boron area, instead of all the way on the 215/15 to Barstow, it could sae her some time and miles IF the 395 is a good road. I have never gone that route, but if it's a good one, both road condition and traffic-wise, it will become my new route as well.

So, am looking to see if anyone has traveled the 395 between Hesperia and Boron. :hi:

17. Yes, I was on that stretch of 395 in 1993. Flat boring desert, but a good enough road.

Oh! Also found this site that helped some:

I just sent my friend trip route directions with the two choices from the I-10 to Hwy. 58

19. I would still recommend only nighttime or early morning driving through the desert
To try to make it from Tucson to the central valley of CA all in one day seems like torture to me, especially at this time of year. That would be a miserable trip. They should stop at someplace like Palm Springs and wait out the hot afternoon in a cool pool somewhere.

13. I really dig the 395
but I think it's faster to take the major freeways, including the 5. Just don't go though LA during rush hour. :P

15. Hey, XemaSab!
I know what you mean re: I-10 through LA and over the Grapevine on I-5. Over the last few years seems LA freeways are clogged or in traffic accident mode no matter what time of day. That's why I've been taking Hwy.58 between Bakersfield and Barstow, and the I-215/I-15 between Barstow and San Bernadino as my main route to and from Tucson.

How's the birding?

This morning I was wearing a 'jama gown that has big coral and yellow flowers all over it. There are also big coral trumpet flowers growing on my fence. I was outside and a hummingbird came right up to me as if my flowers might be worth investigating! I think my giggle about it when it was happening kind of scared it. However, it WAS such a cute moment! I love those hummingbirds!

I've been up there a few times.

Every time I went there wasn't much traffic. That section of 395's just a flat straight burn, it's two lanes but there aren't many places where you slow down.

That said, if he/she's just going from San Bernadino to Barstow, I think the 15's going to be fastest.

Am thinking she'll take the 215/15 anyway.

Thanks! :hi:
