*sigh* It seems like I just can't escape it....
Went to a wedding over the weekend, friend of my girlfriend's, so I didn't know a damn soul in the place besides her. That was okay, it was a day away from world affairs and how Shrubbie is running the country straight into the ground.

That was not to be of course. The groom happens to be a Specialist in the army and he'll probably be deployed to Afghanistan in January. Right there you think people would stop and think "Hey, didn't we already win that war?" but sheepism knows no bounds. Instead the bride made a speech on how the events of 9/11 has shaped their lives and wanted us all to hear a song she chose for the occasion.

The song?

"Have You Forgotten?"

:puke:

Not only is there hueueueueuege (TM Bartcop) irony in playing that song for someone being sent to Afghanistan, it also wrecked my plans to have a day without getting pissed at world affairs.

1. That just proves my theory....
....You have to be crazy, to get married.

I've been married a long time myself.

2. That's a hell of song to play at a wedding
That song makes me want to puke, also. I just want to forget that song! The more I think about, the more I don't understand the bride's intentions. Did they slow dance to the song? I think I would have died from pukitis if I saw something like that.

4. No dancing
It was just a "I want you all to hear this song" kind of thing. The funny part was I had just walked over to the bridal party table to talk to my girlfriend (she was a bridesmaid) when it happened. We both had that "what the F?" look on our faces.

3. We should all get together and do a fundie thing...Burn copies of that
blasted song. How scary that it rose up the charts like that. I'll add my puke.:puke:

I think I would have pointedly gotten up and walked out.

6. There is nothing tackier than a bride singing at her own wedding

7. Even tackier than
a bride singing at her own wedding is a bride singing "Have We Forgotten" at her own wedding.

8. I've been thinking about this phenomenon lately
How could the people in the military and those with friends and family in the military continue to support the missions that this misadministration has gotten them into? We don't really have control in Afghanistan and we're in Iraq for profits based on a lie.

Then it hit me. They are pretty much stuck unless they go AWOL, so how else would you be able to rationalize all the pain and suffering and deprivation other than embracing the mission. Think of the disconnect. Of course it has to be worth it. Of course they have to be protecting America and fighting for are freedom, democracy and way of life.

When your son or daughter comes home in a coffin, what is going to give you more comfort? That they died for oil and world domination in an unprecedented power grab or they died a hero?

If you are going to call for sacrifice, there has to be a greater good worth the sacrifice -- real or invented.

BTW, I think it is REALLY tacky to use your wedding as a political platform. Did they bride wear red, white and blue? Were there flags in the table centerpieces? Was the cake decorated with stars and stripes? ;-)
