I went for a physical about a month ago and they told me that I had a trace of blood in my urine. The doctor asked me if I had any pain and I said no. She then told me that blood in the urine without any pain is a possible symptom of bladder cancer. After I just about fainted she told me that she didn't think that was the case because I am young and I was drinking a lot of pop which could have also been the problem. She was concerned enough, however, that she told me to get it checked out again in a month. Somebody also told me the other day that they had a trace of blood in their urine at one time and it turned out to be kidney cancer.
I did more reading about bladder and kidney cancer than a med student. It turned out that I didn't have any of the other symptoms of those diseases, but I was still concerned.
So a month rolled by and I went to my family doctor to get checked out yesterday. I have been drinking nothing but water for the last month. Not even a little beer on the weekends which I had gotten into the habit of doing. The test said that I still had a trace of blood in my urine, albeit a very, very slight trace. The doctor looked at a sample of my urine under a microscope and found no red blood cells. She did find a few white blood cells which she told me was indicative that I had an infection or was probably getting over one because there were so few of them.
I'm going to keep drinking nothing but water, though. I feel better since I've been doing that. And I feel even better that I'm not in the hospital right now preparing to have my bladder or a kidney removed.
