Somebody was trying to gain access to my computer.
I was getting repeated access attempts from 217.133.104.49, a different username each time. Also periodically trying to log in as root. It is clearly a script. The IP address seems to belong to tiscali.it. Is there any point reporting it to them? I don't imagine the attacker is actually using that computer, it's probably a remote attack, right?

4. It might have been a bot
operating on that computer. Lots of times, the computer owners aren't aware that they are being parasited (is that a word?),

5. I'm sure it was.
I'd be really surprised if the attacker was actually using that machine. Looking at my log files, I got a load of access attempts yesterday too from a different address. Nobody managed to gain access though.

I emailed the abuse addresses of the two ISPs concerned, for what it's worth.
