1. Some people still don't understand anything about mental illness.
They have a picture in their mind of someone who is really bad, who maybe isn't being treated, or who needs to be in a mental institution.

There are lots and lots of people functioning quite well who have some type of mental illness. I have depression and anxiety, but they are controlled quite well with medication.

You are just fine in my book!

34. Same here...anxiety, depression.
I am on Zoloft, Buspirone, Risperdal, and Seroquel for sleep. I was taking meds once before but my ex made me quit them because he couldn't control me when I was on them. I suffered for a lot of years.

21. I'm very matter-of-fact about mine
I don't go around shouting it from the rooftops but I don't avoid the subject and I try to educate people in a non-obnoxious way. The fact that I'm the most stable and together person most of my friends know makes it that much more powerful when I tell them I was in a nuthouse just 10 years ago.

I've given some other people hope when they had run out of it and that to me is a lot more important than what the narrow-minded think.

27. I think you ARE dangerous
All thinking people are dangerous to Republicans and to the status quo. :)

As for the mental illness thingie, pshhh. Makes you more interesting and courageous, in my book. I've watched my brother, grandmother, several great aunts, cousins, and close friends deal with various types of it, ranging from paranoid schizophrenia to bipolarism. The last woman I fell in love with was bipolar, come to think of it. I have a healthy fear of the illness, and nothing but respect for the struggles people go through to deal with it. Not the least of those struggles is battling the ignorance of people concerning it.

You're cool.

If some people do, they need to learn more
about what it is they fear.

Education really alleviates many fears.

30. i'm not offended nor do i feel you are dangerous
Edited on Sun Sep-09-07 09:05 PM by pitohui
however in the real world i do not knowingly any longer associate with people that i know to be borderline personality disorder

no offense, but it just ain't worth it

it is nothing to do w. a horror of mental illness, as i have no problem having friends who have clinical depression, paranoid schizophrenia, PTSD, and the like -- it is a matter of protecting oneself

here is an example from physical illness --

i am not offended by someone who has SARS and i am happy to talk w. them on the internet but i would not willingly associate w. them in real life either -- why, because i hate the person with SARS? no because i just don't want to be harmed myself

it's a survival issue, and i am just as worthy of protecting myself and my own survival as anyone else

many mental illnesses can be controlled by medication and in any event the data shows the victims are almost always only a threat to themselves, no more dangerous to the general population than a person w.out mental illness

this is simply not true of the sociopath, they destroy people's peace of mind, marriages, careers, and (rarely) lives -- they bring chaos wherever they go -- and well there is some shit up with which i'm not willing to put anymore i'm afraid

if you think the dx of BPD is accurate and you think you can overcome it, and you have a plan to overcome it, working with your medical team, that's great, but i don't see any benefit to yourself from broadcasting this dx since it isn't common experience that this particular condition much responds to treatment

i would be delighted to be given cites and new information to the contrary, for all i know, there has been a real breakthru in this in recent years, but my life experience as of today is what it is

feel you dangerous? considering we are posting on the internets certainly not, however I don't know you in real life - so that judgement would depend on circumstances and actions, not your specific diagnosis.

First of all, you're hundreds of miles away from me. And second of all, even though you have a mental illness, you know you do, and you are taking steps to get it under control. I'm scared of the ones who either don't know or don't care. You seem like you have a pretty good head on your shoulders, all things considered. Screw anyone who is judging you. Not only is that the last thing you need, it makes them a small minded idiot.
