I loved the guy. HBO is running a Candy-a-thon. The Great Outdoors. Uncle Buck.

Two of my favorite movies.

A great movie, imho. Still love to watch it when I catch it on cable.

No. I didn't get a lot of dates.

I watch it at least three times a year.

I thought Roger Ebert had gone daffy when he included it in his "Great Movies" compilation. Yet after a second viewing, I realized he was absolutely spot on.

Besides CITY LIGHTS, it's the only comedy that gets a tear out of me.

"Besides, how would he know where we're heading anyway?"

"She may be small, but she's strong. She had a baby, it came out sideways. She didn't scream or nothin'."

Have you guys seen him in "The Clown Murders"? If not, check it out. A very atypical role.

... my ex and I moved from the city to a small town north of Toronto (which explains why he's my ex, but that's another story).

We'd been told that John Candy lived not far from us, on a country road just south of our place.

As I was driving along that road one day, I noticed a house up on a hill, with two mailboxes at the end of the driveway, on the roadside. One was on a wooden pole about four feet high, a metal mailbox painted with the words "Regular Mail".

Alongside it was another pole, this one about eighteen feet high, with a similar metal mailbox - painted with the words "Air Mail".

So I knew I'd located John Candy's house ...

... (Carson perhaps) talking about that house. It sat at the top of a rather substantial hill. But apparently he and his wife constantly had problems with the basement flooding.

He did an incredible ten-minute diatribe about how water apparently ran uphill in his little corner of Ontario, and went on to explain his theories of how that could come to be. It was absolutely hysterical!
