Can a negative outlook actually make you feel better?
After 34 years of a lot of disappointments and some good times, I have come to the conclusion that my life basically sucks. Don't get me wrong: I do get some enjoyment from a lot of things in my life. But it seems like, when I become very optimistic about something, reality appears and bites me in the ass and I feel completely miserable.

After disappointment after disappointment in life, I have discovered a way to deal with it and trick myself into becoming moderately happy and satisfied with my life. If I accept that life basically sucks, the little things that don't suck become more enjoyable. Has anybody else used this method?

I am a miserable fuck lately..I know I'm either going to feel much better soon or feel 10 times worse, depending on what happens in the next few days. Optimism kicked my ass this week, and I'm feeling the vicious sting of reality now, and I'm trying to deal with it.

1. "People are generally as happy as they make up their minds to be." -Abraham Lincoln.
All of the great spiritual principles I've found involve moving against the flow, transcending the environment, and doing what you don't feel like doing, such as trying to find reasons for gratitude in spite of disaster. It's not a rejection of reality, but a transcendence.

Good luck.

2. My father told me that I'd feel better if I had no expectations
He thinks that I am unhappy because I am always expecting good things and get upset when the good things don't happen. I also don't get as much joy out of things that I hope for when they actually happen because I have already spent a lot of time considering them that when they happen I don't feel as much. I am happiest when something good happens that I did not even consider.
Despite his advice, I cannot escape from my mode of thinking.

3. I guess that if one has no expectations, then
one will never be disappointed. As for myself, I expect everything I do to have a positive outcome. When something doesn't work out as I planned, it just spurs me to do better next time.

4. Reality Is Pure. Circumstance Is Not. It Is Circumstance That Bit You On The Ass.
Circumstance should be always regarded with a cautious eye. Never trust it. It will always try and get the better of you. But don't ever feel shy to just shout out in the middle of the room "FUCK YOU CIRCUMSTANCE!!!!".

Circumstance sucks. Life is beautiful. Never forget that everything you will ever need to be happy is in the palm of an empty hand.
