It's the children's book celebration and appreciation thread.
"The Box of Delights (or When the Wolves Were Running)" by John Masefield is an epic story about a young British boy, Kay Harker, who is given a mysterious box by a hobo. This box has the power to make you fly, make you become tiny, or take you back in the past. Dark forces are after the box, however, and it's up to Kay to protect the box and make sure the midnight Christmas celebration takes place as planned.

Please share your own beloved books. :)

1. I loved the "Black Stallion" series of books when I was a kid
Edited on Sat Sep-15-07 09:19 PM by Droopy
I think they were written by Walter Farley. It's about a kid who is involved in a shipwreck and he ends up on a deserted island with a black stallion- the only two survivors of the wreck. That series of books is responsible for me falling in love with reading.

2. RIP Madeleine L'Engle
Reading her obit last week, I learned she never intended "A Wrinkle In Time" to be a children's book, but it sure turned out well for her.

I remember reading it for the first time in 5th grade... I sat glued to our armchair after school, and read it in one sitting.

8. Ironically, Lois Lowery's "The Giver" was also unintentionally a children's book
Ironically, Lois Lowery's "The Giver" was also unintentionally a children's book. She wrote it as a novella/short story, but -- in these modern times when short stories are virtually unpublishable -- there was no one willing to put it into print. So her short story for adults became a novel for children. Just goes to show that the "children" in "Children's Literature" is a misnomer. Especially if it has a Newberry stamp on it.
