Poll question: which one? which dog should we look at?
Edited on Tue Sep-18-07 04:21 PM by radfringe
by now you've heard my rants, and despair over trying to find a puppy...

today we have a dilemma - so I'm asking for your vote. We have two in mind. both are at County run shelters, one shelter is an hour north of us, the other an hour south...

Lily: 6-month old german shepherd/irish wolf-hound, female
shelter info on her: Lily was adopted from us but apparently the people didn't realize that she was still a puppy. She just needs to learn some basic manners, but she is a wonderful dog. Lily is about 6 months old, great with the other dogs, and very affectionate with people.

Daisy: 7-8 month old St. Bernard, female
Shelter info on her:Daisy is a young female saint. She has a dopey disposition and is happy to sit on your lap in the grass if you are willing to let her. She loves belly rubs. Daisy will sometimes bounce around and tug at her leash when out for a walk and will need an adopter that is accustomed to large dogs and can commit to giving her the training, exercise, proper diet and grooming that she'll need to stay healthy and happy.

we have the time to train either, experienced with large breeds, and about an acre of land in the country where there are more cows than people....

1. You need to meet them both.
If you're that torn, you should spend a couple hours with each one and decide.

Both dogs look great and sound wonderful, but are completely different in how they're going to grow up.

15. No, I'm thinking the same thing.
Both.

Of course, we're not paying the food bills and cleaning up after them, so it's easy to say.

4. it's not drool
it's slingers... and my partner is experienced with slingers via the mastiffs she use to raise

you can always tell a big dog owner by the towel hanging from the back pocket... lol

7. I like sighthounds
I would look at the Wolfhound/shepard mix. If the sighthound gene is strong you'll have to be careful with it off leash. They have a tendency to want to run things down without regard for their own safety. That may mean giving chase to the cows.

I have also heard that Wolfhounds are very short lived dogs.

8. I'm with flvegan, both need a good home.
Just think, you could have a garden of dogs! A Lily and A Daisy! They could be best buddies!

9. Wow. That IS a dilemma.
Edited on Tue Sep-18-07 04:35 PM by mycritters2
I guess, if I had to choose, for me, I'd go with the dry mouthed one...I'm also a sucker for any of the hound breeds, and Wolfhounds are great dogs. But honestly, it's a hard choice to make. I'd hate to see either of these dogs not go to a great home (I know what too often happens to dogs in county shelters).
So, if you put a gun to my head and said "CHOOSE!", I'd go with Lily. But I'd feel badly for Daisy.

on edit: I just looked at 'em both again, and I agree with those who say "Adopt both". They even have coordinated names!! Yep, if I could, I'd pick both of these beautiful flowers.

10. I'd take the mixed breed.
Likely to live longer, and that leaves the "more desirable" pure-bred for someone else who might not be quite as eager to adopt.

11. I voted for Lily but if you have the space and the patience...
how about both? I am looking for a small dog myself. This is the one I just filled out an appliacation for a couple of days ago...

Anyhow, do you have to travel far to pick up either dog? Is that a factor? Geez, I love Daisy too, but as was pointed out, the mixed breeds seem to have fewer health issues and live longer....decisions, decisions....

I am sure you will lurv whichever one is lucky enough to have you.

16. we talked it over and we are
going to take a look at Silly Lily... and at puppy-puppies if they have them..

it wasn't mentioned in the blurb about Lily - but we will have to see how she is with cats as we have 5 cats and aren't giving them up
