1. I hear you, my dear KW!
I'm so used to them now!

When I visit other places where they don't grow, I don't expect them, or miss them either...

7. I really have no idea...I suppose it's possible!
The big palms have room in the fronds at the top...

And the stalks are rough enough to make them easy to climb!

10. Rats and pigeons do live in them, especially the shorted untrimmed palms

13. Owls do.
Rats live just fine in garages, sewars and under detrius beside houses.

2. Watch out for the old ones - they have been known to kill people when the whole top falls.

3. I've always wanted to set one on fire.
I almost did, once. My girlfriend and I were all set, had the gas can and everything, but the cops rolled up so we started making out instead. Long story.

Anyway: give it another year, and you'll start to hate the damn things. Fakers. Poseurs. They're not real trees at all, and the bastards are infectious, like 50 foot weeds, sprouting all up and down your lawn, and them some ignorant SOB says, "But what about the shade they provide?" and you have to restrain yourself from punching the guy right in the stomach.

4. We have not a single palm tree on the lot!
Of course our yard is mostly cement...

9. Oh, you will. You will.
And cement's the worst. They grow in the cracks. And they want you to feel sorry for them, and not to kill them, because little baby palm trees are actually kind of cute.

You know how ugly puppies are cute? Same with baby palm trees, like ferns with a pituitary disorder. It's all really very insidious.

Although, the nice thing about the Southwest is, is that no matter how desolate and dry and palm-infested it can get, mountains and cool temperatures and real trees are just an hour's drive from anywhere. OK, I'm in my happy place now, and the urge to burn is fading, and there are trees with leaves... :)
