The BlueIris Semi-Nightly Poem Thread, 9/22/07 Bonus
"The Edge of Autumn"

The wind, a rustle of leaves
and brown hair fanned out, strand
by strand into blown leaves—

a light squall across littered
grass, a shimmering of leaves
and brown, blown hair.

A radio plays beneath a static
of leaves, dark maple, yellow elm—
Everytime we meet, everything is sweet,

and meeting, leaf-strewn, soft-
edge in a shelter of brown leaves,
her hair is drawn out by a soft wind,

and the radio plays the rhythm
of his hands sweetly across her
leaf-strewn back. From the black

plastic case, through dry leaves,
the news from Bien Hoa; it says,
one grieves at the thought of men

sprawled among rubble,
while the lovers, here,
cresting on a wave of leaves,

rubble at a season's edge,
strain to a memory of music,
the lasting rhythms of an insistent dance.

2. I was just talking about autumn and it's effect on me the other day
I've got a rough history. Done some bad things and had some bad things done to me. The memories of those things seem to haunt me through the spring and the summer, but when autumn rolls around I feel more at ease with myself and those bad memories lose their intensity. I feel more nostalgic this time of year. It's almost as if autumn forgives me.

3. Were you born in autumn?
That could have something to do with it.

6. Yes I was! Born 10/4/72
I thought that might have something to do with it as well, but what that is I don't know. Maybe you can help me solve the mystery.

5. Autumn is my season
That puts all its feelings nicely into words and rhythms. Autumn makes me want to ponder, and move, and feel. :hi:

11. Plus, this author, who is obsessed with water, specifically rivers,
has a terrific compositional style. He really knows how to let a poem breathe, so its best music can come through. I like concision as much as the next poet, but so much of what is getting recognized these days is paired down to little more than the bare essentials. And there are other ways to communicate in poetry.
