29. And she's a critter woman, too...
She used the song Angel in a commercial encouraging animal adoption, where she had her Labrador retriever Max sitting on her lap. Awwww.

For the record, most of our animals have been rescues - either from neglectful owners or directly from the streets. ginbarn and I are doing our part.

That song will turn you to putty if you're not careful. And help you develop a new appreciation for uillean pipes, too.

24. There's another version of that song floating out there...
...where the constant camera shutter in Kate's original version has been replaced with the single cocking of the bolt on a military rifle. There's also a heavier acoustic guitar element as well.

John Whiffin and Jacqui McShee recorded their version of Army Dreamers as part of the three-disc Universal Soldiers compilation on the Dressed to Kill label, released in 1999.

10. her voice is incredible.
'deep red bells' and 'star witness' and 'maybe sparrow' are all beautifully intense songs...
and for more upbeat stuff, her work with the new pornographers is great as well...

12. look into emily haines and jenny lewis, too, if you're not familiar with them.
emily haines has an awesome album out, 'knives don't have our backs'...it's awesome, if you like darker, more reflective stuff.
jenny lewis fronts rilo kiley and is just awesome. also worth a listen.

34. I love Neko Case too...
She's not my favorite but I have both Blacklisted and Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, and I also enjoy it when she sings lead on certain New Pornographers songs (especially "These Are the Fables"). I went to see the New Pornographers live a week ago and was standing on the left side of the audience, and she was on that side and I was about six feet away from her.

21. Laurie Anderson, without question.
Edited on Sun Sep-23-07 10:22 AM by Peake
Although she got a bit silly on the Sharkey's Day record/tour.

Edit: Kate Bush is right up there as well.

23. Damn! How could I have forgotten Laurie?
I still remember watching her co-host Alive From Off-Center on PBS. If any of you never heard of that show, please do yourself a favor and research that show. It was a great showcase for avant-garde video art projects.

31. Good choice, but I wouldn't put her in the same category as the poll choices
Same goes for Beth from Portishead. Love 'em both, though - they've just done stuff that was so different from anything that Sarah McLachlan or Kate Bush has done that I didn't think it would do them justice to put them in the same poll.

with the exception of Laurie Anderson (who also doesn't belong with those pop singers)
