I wish DU had a chat room
Edited on Wed Sep-26-07 06:06 AM by Connonym
especially in the wee hours of the night. I know I'm not the only insomniac here. I'd be good to have people to talk to.

ETA: I think I mean I wish the LOUNGE had a chat room. I dunno if I'd be up to the GD type of chat in the middle of the night.

1. I've often wondered why it doesn't, but in the end, I think it's a good thing...
...that there isn't. It would change the dynamics of DU.

6. yeah, like asl?
Gadzooks, I hate most open chats. Haven't been in one in years. The most fun I ever had was when I was new to the Internet a long time ago. AOL had an uncensored chat run by the ACLU called the Free Speech Zone. It was hilarious, enlightening, crazy, wild, and peopled with mostly smart folk. I know of one DU-er who was on that chat with me way back when. We're still friends.

10. I remember The Free Speech Zone!
But I usually camped out in FTL (From the Left) most of the time. Also, the News Room. As usual, they all got overrun by knuckledraggers. Right about that time I saw Skinner on C-SPAN hawking this place. I logged on and subsequently canceled my AOL account in 2001.

7. I'm sure somebody could set up an IRC thing or something.
Only thing similar I've ever run is a MUCK, which is basically a specialized kind of chat room made for roleplaying. You actually have a character rather than just a login name, and you can create objects and rooms and whatnot, and instead of just talking you can also interact with said object, rooms and characters. :)

9. Actually, we used to about 3 or 4 years ago.
It wasn't official, just something a couple of DUers started. I don't think its still up but anyone can start one.

12. There was an unofficial chat on AIM that ran for a long time.
Somebody opened a chat room on AIM and just left it open all the time. Everybody had it saved and would just enter the chat whenever they felt like it. I used to hang out in there and talk to lots of folks. Kephra, Will Pitt, Catwoman and so many others used to stop in and chat. (Has anybody even SEEN Enki around lately, BTW?) We'd sit in there and snark when the asswipe in the oval office was on TV...

I think there were people who didn't care for AIM, and that created problems. I also think that there was a feeling that chatting created too many cliques and THAT created problems--so it just kind of drifted away.

I kind of miss it because it was just a hoot to hang out with all the evil DUers.
