Poll question: Since it's Star Trek theme night... what's your favorite ST series?
For me it's a tossup between Deep Space Nine and the Next Generation. I think TNG had the most solid writing and character development, but I love DS9's intricate political subterfuges. I'll probably vote for DS9 because it doesn't get enough love.

1. Next Generation for me...
I grew up watching the original... but Shatner's cheesiness was just too much!

Plus, I love data.

2. some people in the real world have observed I act like Data.
Except I got there first. (Maybe Rick Berman spied on me when I was a tot...)

Which reminds me, I wanna get TNG season 2 on DVD - Data, Geordi, and Pulaski made a far more fun trio than Data, Picard, and Riker.

3. Me too
I hate Nemesis for the absolutely shitty way they handled Data - for god's sake he was probably THE fan favorite character, he deserved better than that.

25. Star Trek V was MUCH worse than Nemesis.
I agree that Nemesis was pretty damn bad, but The Final Frontier was much, much worse... The entire story is just beyond plausibility, even for Star Trek. You have to take every science fiction story less than seriously, but Star Trek V is beyond unbelievable.

28. Star Trek V is bad
But it was bad because it's reach exceeded it's grasp. I actually though they had an idea there that had a lot of potential, but it was poorly executed. But Nemesis was just plain awful. The minute I saw Picard launch out of a shuttlecraft in some 24th century dune buggy and go offroading on some far away world, I knew that this movie was headed for disaster. And it only got worse as time when on.

33. Okay... I agree with that. They were both "worst" for different reasons.
Nemesis because that "send off" for the crew of TNG completely destroyed any credibility for them and nearly killed the greatest sci-fi franchise around these days. Star Trek still needs a miracle to be saved from the fate of fading into the ages.

The Final Frontier was just beyond ludicrous... Spock's rocket boots, searching for God at the center of the galaxy, the Enterprise A have at least 78 decks, passing through the galactic barrier, finding a planet at the center of the galaxy, encountering "God," "God" becomes enraged and wants to destroy Kirk for mocking him, and the Klingons destroy "God" with their disruptors.

I need to go take a shower after even thinking about that movie for this long...

22. I never really watched the show, don't know why either
and I thought Scott Bakula was kinda dorky back then, silly me. BTW, Dean Stockwell had a guest roll on one of the Enterprise episodes. It was cool to watch them work together.

I used to be in love with Conner Trinneer (Tucker) on Enterprise in the beginning but slowly Archer (Bakula) took over, his toosh looks incredible in his uniform.

I think I've seen every episode... and I missed out when it was on, cause my fiance didn't like it and wanted me to be with him on Quantum Leap nights. x(

But I watched every single re-run during my lunch breaks... lived really close to where I worked. Man, those were the best lunch breaks ever!

http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Star_Trek:_The_Animated_Series

There are some neat ideas in the animated series, including the very first holodeck episode (yes, you read that right - the original ship had a holodeck!)

on edit: "Yesteryear" written by DC Fontana is in fact considered canon: in it Spock goes back in time via the Guardian of Forever and visits his younger self. Actually a moving episode.

one more edit:

18. Ok let me point out a few things
Kirk didn't command from an Office (I don't buy the "Ready Room" title)

Spock was not foolish enough to insist the Captain stay aboard during away missions because 1) Kirk would dope slap him 2) The away team had a much better chance of survival when Kirk was with them

Kirk's Enterprise Went Boldly Where No Human Had Gone - I mean Space Man! Not backroom Klingon or Federation Politics

Holodecks are not necessary when you make your own adventures in the Real Galaxy

Kirk and his senior officers stopped a Galactic Invasion On Their Own

They had the work with much inferior equipment and a much more hostile local galactic neighborhood.

Just to name a few...TOS is the clear choice for the best Trek incarnation.

24. A much more hostile background?
I'm going to have to disagree here. TOS had the Klingons and the Romulans. That's it. In TNG and DS9 you had the Romulans, Cardassians, Borg, The Dominion, Ferengi, and the Breen. And even though the Klingons were supposed to be the Federation's allies, the alliance was always tenuous and they even went to war with each other for short time in DS9 due to The Dominions's manipulations.

I'd have to say that the galactic neighborhood was much more hostile in the 24th century than it was in the 23rd.

would actually negotiate, in the TOS environment they came out shooting and didn't ask questions or offer to negotiate, it was submit or nothing. Like everyone had the attidute of the Borg but they lived right next door and you had to deal with them every day not once a season :)

And the TOS crew had much less effective means to fight aliens with powers to destroy planets and suns and worse - annihilate all of reality in some cases with that lesser technology.

40. The new 'remastered' TOS just proves how awesome it was
Same shows but with brighter picture and sound and new, state-of-the-art CGI effects for HD.

The TOS always had great characters, stories, and writing (well, some episodes were better than others). The remastering "tweaks" have made this 40-year-old series better than 99% of anything else on TV today.

From "Amok Time". And yes, that's Spock's hometown from the animated series in the background!

42. I have to agree
I was not very optimistic about the idea of these 'improvements' but I think they did a tasteful job of touching things up without ruining the theme and tone. I still like having the originals but the tweaked up ones are good.

26. I feel the same way
This series has really grown on me. Setting it in the Delta Quadrant was brilliant. It's watching humanity play out against insurmountable odds -- surviving, not just thriving. The producers have the advantage of more advanced computer graphics and use them well. And no ST series has ever had a character quite like:

27. Deep Space Nine is, hands down, MY favorite.
Some of the stories were just amazing. They strayed a little from Gene Roddenberry's theme of the ideal future sometimes, but they had drama, character-driven stories, and even political intrigue - along with shades of paranoia, fascism, and war. I loved DS9.

The Next Generation is a close second, followed by a tie between Voyager and the original series.

When it came down to it, Roddenberry's writing style became obselete. Remember the two TNG episodes he wrote? (datalore and hide and q) They were bloody awful.

36. DS9 started out good... but after about season three it started going downhill.
I didn't even watch it by the end.

Contrarywise, TNG started out not that great and got better as it went on.

Enterprise was decent, could have been better, but I enjoy watching it. I won't say it's as good as TNG or the first few seasons of DS9 though.

41. I'm giving some love to Enterprise.
I doubt it'll supplant TNG as my favorite, but despite its mostly blah plots, Enterprise had the best dialogue and ensemble acting of them all. At the time the series ran, I was ready for a grittier Trek with a cast resembling us, actual small talk between characters, and a captain who combined the best of Picard and Kirk with a strong practical streak and real vulnerability. I liked the intrigue and the long story arcs which resembled the best of DS9. I liked the consequences that the crew faced for their actions. I liked that they had to put on space suits and climb ladders to go dirtside. No epically tormented half-breeds, robots or aliens on the bridge--just regular folks. I really dug the doctor, perhaps the most intriguing alien on any Trek.

I could wish that the theme song had been taken out and shot, or better yet, that it had been sung by Scott Bakula himself (whether or not he can sing), accompanied by and acoustic guitar. I could wish that the producers had had the courage to give the ship a different name (we know Archer's vessel wasn't on Picard's wall). I could wish that they'd gone ahead and named the show Prime Directive.
