Albuterol is going bye-bye after 31 Dec. 2008...
http://www.ctpharmacists.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3488

During this important transition, the supply of CFC-based asthma inhalers will gradually decline, while supplies of HFA-based inhalers are expected to increase. It's important to talk to your patients now about transitioning to HFA inhaler alternatives early so they can successfully make the switch.

17. I haven't used one.
It's rare that I get an attack at all. But I'm seeing the Dr. soon and think I'll ask for one. Do you use one?

19. I use albuterol
I use it so rarely though. I am not on a controller, and am thinking perhaps I should be (especially with the air quality out here).

5. It's not the albuterol that's being discontinued
It's the propellant. Unfortunately, it sounds as if generic albuterol inhalers will no longer be available.

Prepare to see your prescription bills soar.;(

7. exactly so
does it make me cynical that I don't think it's a coincidence? Just another fucking instance of policy being made with the benefit of corporate America in mind and the hell with the little guy.

10. CFCs destroy ozone. It's to help save the environment.
In that aspect, nothing can be too small.

12. yes but
when I see other environmental issues that get conveniently ignored when it's good for business I can't help but get frustrated when something like an inhaler -- which dramatically improves quality of life and even saves lives on a daily basis -- become unaffordable for the little guy it just pisses me off. I realize that it all adds up but it seems like a screwed up priority. Admittedly, I'm touchy about this issue because I've been hospitalized for my asthma in the past and I don't have insurance now...it makes me feel really vulnerable and it's hard for me to see this from an objective point of view. It's selfish but I see how it will affect me and I know there are a lot of people in worse financial straits who it will affect even more so.

14. Very true...
With luck the new inhaler styles will have a generic counterpart at some point.

probably won't see generics until the patents are expired.

22.  A person I know who uses this product says it will increase in price
about 300%. That person has great insurance and won't pay a cent more for the new albuterol.

6. the part about this that is most upsetting
is that there is no generic equivalent to the HFA inhalers so that means that they'll probably cost a fortune. It says they'll have a program to assist the uninsured but it's still going to be a big smack in the pocketbook. Hopefully I'll have health insurance by then. My asthma's been under pretty good control but I'm so anxious about it that I keep inhalers in every room, in my bag, at my bf's house, in the car, etc. I'm going to go broke!

8. I don't have insurance either
And the generics are $15 locally: name brands are $45. Even for people with insurance, this could represent a price hike. My old medical insurance charged $10 for generics, and $25 for others.

Maybe I should move to Cuba....Nah. My Spanish isn't that great.

9. I have insurance but I max out my drug coverage by August or so.
Luckily I don't use Albuterol that much anymore (because I'm on the insanely expensive Advair and Singulair), but this sucks for people unless they have equally cheap alternatives available for people. :(

11. I stopped using Advair and (knock on wood) Singulair has been controlling me
I've been getting it from Canada, it's cheaper from there but still isn't cheap. Sometimes when I think about the health care issues in America, and the war, and civil liberties and all of the other stuff that's going on I get freaked out because it seems like everything has gone crazy and I don't think we're ever going to get uncrazy in my lifetime. Fortunately, Xanax is available generic.

23. My husband is on Advair...
He rarely uses his albuterol inhaler and takes the the advair. He seems to like it better. He gets his from the VA so it is less expensive. If we had to pay for his medicines even through our co-pay on his insurance we could never afford it. With the VA it's at least somewhat affordable.

Yes Advair is totally ridiculous in price.

It's a good thing I don't have obvious wheezing.

21. My doc just gave me a new inhaler on Friday - it's ProAir HFA
(albuterol sulfate)

I just looked them up online and they do have patient assistance - don't know what the salary cap is for it, but here's the site:
http://www.proairhfa.com/PatientAssistance.aspx

I do feel for you - I'm lucky to have insurance but my mom's without for another couple of years and it's a huge and constant worry. I hope you have some soon!

26. Joking about the CFCs, I admit. However, it wouldn't surprise me to see
some shortages, recalls, and stratospheric prices as the new products roll out. I'll feel better having a backup or two of the stuff I know will work...

20. I can't hear the word Albuterol without thinking of a song my friends and I did years ago.
It was called The Asthmatic Cat, and he worshipped at the foot of Mt. Albuterol. That's what happens when you mix musical instruments and a bunch of drunks. :silly:
