Poll question: Your Preference for a Bookstore
If you walked into a used bookstore,
say about 800 sq feet,
say about 12,000 books on the shelves,
how do you prefer the store be setup?

1. In sections for sure
When I go to the bookstore I usually go with a specific topic in mind.

In sections, but inside each section, alphabetized by author!

I know, I have to make it difficult for you!

4. Alphabetical by author is not how most of us are trained to browse.
Libraries aren't set up that way either. What would be helpful is a terminal where one could search by author, but that only makes sense in a large store.

:-)

7. By sections - but not perfectly.
I do like to browse through the sections which tend to interest me - but to have a couple of semi-relavent books thrown into the mix (which probably comes from customers moving books around in reality) adds an immense amount of interest to the browsing.

8. By genre, then author
When I want to explore writing, and I latch on to an author, I want to see what other work an author has done besides the one that captured my attention. And by extention, I want to see other authors who have a similar theme.

This sounds similar to the used book stall that I frequent at the flea market. It's easy for me to find the topics/authors that interest me.

What kind of setup do you have now? What kind of feedback have you gotten from your customers?

Edited on Sun Oct-14-07 03:21 PM by krispos42
If alpha by author is easier for you, then maybe you could buy some colored and/or shaped stickers for the various genres and stick them on the spines. And/or place them in different spots on the spine.

If half the store was fiction and half non-fiction, then on the fiction side romance could be pink, techno-thriller orange, sci-fi/fantasy green, mystery blue, suspense/horror red, action/adventure white, etc.

People looking for a particular genre would simply follow the color.

Or, I could just be crazy.

Your pick! :-)

34. Two major sections:
Fiction, (all fiction), by author

Non-fiction: in some logical order, if not a quasi dewey decimal, some reasonable facsimile.

It drives me nuts to go to barnes noble and they have "fiction" and "literature". Huh? I've yet to grasp their distinction, but seems ludicrous, with "literature" being pre 1950, or things that they perceive you would never read for pleasure. What a frickin clusterf*.

sections. When we lived in a very small town up north, the whole library was strictly alphabetical by author with no sections and it was a pain in the ass to find a specific genre. I hated it.

38. in sections
it's easier to know which sections I'll avoid -psychobabble, child rearing etc and which sections I'll haunt such as sci fi, mysteries, poetry, mythology.
I tend to wander around the whole book store before zeroing in on what I find interesting. I'm positive the few sections I avoid hold other customer's interest.
