RIP Larry, Mr. Bullwinkle925, 1929-2007: His long struggle ended today

My beloved sister, Bullwinkle925, just called me. Her husband of almost 33 years, Larry, died this afternoon at 4:17 PDT. She said he went extremely peacefully and easily. I had talked to her earlier today, and she told me his breathing was labored and he was unresponsive, and they were treating a fever.

Larry was born in San Francisco to Chinese immigrant parents. He was a proud Marine. He was such a kind and generous man. He and Sue met when he was a tax auditor for the state of California and she worked in Safeway's accounting office. I remember meeting him when I was a child of 9 or so. They married in 1974, and every summer they would drive back to Kansas from California. We always looked forward to those visits. He would bring us fortune cookies, and when I ran for student council president in ninth grade, he had special fortune cookies made saying "Vote for Lisa!" I remember him doing cartwheels in our front yard with us. I remember his laugh - you couldn't help but laugh when you heard his infectious laugh.

Larry absolutely LOVED golf. He had a team of golfing buddies with whom he traveled around the country visiting numerous courses. He also loved the San Francisco Giants and playing poker online (just software - not Internet stuff).

Larry was diagnosed with cancer in 1997 and fought it more bravely than anyone I have ever seen. The doctors thought he should have died several years ago, but he fought on ferociously. The past few months have been really hard for him, with aspiration pneumonias, inability to eat or drink anything and intermittent internal bleeding. I last saw him in August and wondered if it would be the last time, but I had hoped to go back to visit right about this time.

Larry leaves behind his loving wife Sue, their daughter Erin, his daughter Lauren and son Darryl from a previous marriage, their loved ones and several other relatives.

He will be cremated, and no service will be held immediately. Instead, Sue and the family plan a Chinese memorial service sometime in November. Mr. DTBK and I will be able to attend.

My sobbing sister sends her love and thanks to DU - she was overwhelmed by your outpouring of prayers and love. I thank you too for your kindness to me.

It is just awful when loved ones are taken too soon. I am glad to hear that he went peacefully. :hug:

He's one you never thought would die - this just proves no one is indestructible.

Larry was such a great guy. I cannot tell you how thoughtful he was. He would see that you needed something, and without saying anything would busy himself finding ways to help you get what you needed. I'm chuckling now as I think of his little garage innovations (putting carpet remnants on the sides of the garage so they wouldn't scratch the paint when they opened the car door, tying up a little ball to indicate how far they needed to pull the car in, and many other things).

Sue and I have lost all of our parents (we had the same mother, but different fathers), as well as our sister (her full sister, my half, but I never really think of things that way). I can't imagine how horrible it must be for her now. I wish so much that I were out there to be with her. I'm glad she has Erin, Lauren and Darryl, as well as dear friends. Our sister Sara also died in October (the day the "PATRIOT" Act was signed), so October will be a very difficult month for her from now on.

I don't know why it is, but all my loved ones seem to die in odd-numbered years. Dad: 1983. Mom: 1987. Sara: 2001. Our kitty Fergus: 2003. Our kitty Simba: 2007. And now Larry: 2007. (Yes, it's been a rotten year, indeed.)

You certainly know how my sister is feeling tonight. Her husband was 78 and had been sick for a long time, so his death was not unexpected.
