ESPN: Torre turns down offer to return as Yanks' skipper (!!!!)

NEW YORK -- Joe Torre rejected a $5 million, one-year contract to return as manager of the New York Yankees on Thursday.

The Yankees offered Torre a one-year deal with a base salary of $5 million and incentives that would have increased his salary to $8 million based on postseason performance. Under that offer, if Torre reached the World Series in 2008, an option for 2009 would have vested.

Torre made $7.5 million this year, the final season of a $19.2 million, three-year contract.

Bench coach Don Mattingly is the leading contender to replace Torre. Yankees broadcaster Joe Girardi, the NL manager of the year with Florida in 2006, is another top contender.

2. i like giradi, for obvious reasons, lol

He kept the Marlins from turning into the Devil Rays. We'd have probably gone to the playoffs, or at least contended again, this year had he still been manager.

Consensus in the Yankee-friendly Mom/Repuke Stepdad household is that his tenure as hitting coach was a disaster; the Yankee hitters stopped displaying the patience that was their signature especially during the glory years of '96-'00, and started hacking away at everything in sight, leading to... well, you know.

The amazing thing is, he's actually a decent human being as long as politics aren't involved. He keeps his horns filed down nice and smooth. :P He treats her like royalty. I just can't understand how the mere mention of, say, France can cause him to turn into Mr. Hyde. :shrug:
