13. It is a flying wing
But I wanted the specific model, whose historical significance is not related to the Nazis.

24. YB49 designed by Jack Northrup.............
Edited on Sun Oct-21-07 12:06 AM by Historic NY
this is the small scale version of what was to be called the "flying wing". The plane went through many design changes but never did fly in any active service. The last versions were powered by jet engines. It was dropped in favor of the YB-47 Stratojet. Note the yellow color is the designated color of an experimental aircraft. This plane formed the basis of the design of the now storied B-1 bomber.

25. Ding!
Well... ding-minus. Your answer combined with achtung_circus's is the correct one. But, yeah — the N9M was a one-third-scale test bed for the YB-35, which became the YB-49 when problems with the drive shafts for the counter-rotating propellors moved Northrop to convert to jet engines. But that severely limited its range, and by then the Boeing B-47 was in production.

Yeah, the B-1 is based on the YB-49. They even have the same wing span.

28. At least Jack was vindicated...............
he lived to see his idea fly, amazing how what was old becomes rediscovered. I strongly believe the quality of our engineering then was much better than now. Their ideas were only limited by the ability to develop raw resources necessary to implement them. I they had the computer technology then the sky would have been the limit. Jack's plane was manual control and they damn near perfected it, today the B-1 is fly by wire and controlled by computers.
