Tips to start a recycling program at my work?
Edited on Mon Oct-22-07 11:12 AM by jasonc
Has anyone ever started a recycling program at work, or maybe just in their office?

How can I do this, who can I call to figure this all out.

For those of you that dont know, I volunteer at a workforce center for homeless men here in Minneapolis and we go through a LOT of paper, I usually print on both sides of the paper, unless I am printing something important such as a resume, but then it gets thrown out. I am sick of throwing paper away when it can be recycled.

Where can I get information about starting a recycling program?

5. Thats a good idea
I was thinking of starting in my work area to begin with, and then expanding it to other work areas if wanted.

7. Some recycling companies will give receptacles and service for free.
We started one at the law firm I was with. Everyone had a box in their cube/office. There were big "trash bins" at every corner that these boxes could be dumped into. Once a week, they'd come by and pick it up.

9. Good for you!
When you want to expand office-wide, here are some thoughts, because one place I worked had a program that worked, whereas the place I work now has a broken program.

At the desk, receptacles must be nearby -- lots of recycling places will give you cardboard boxes to use and you can put those right next to your trash can. Don't expect people to get up and walk anywhere to throw away either recycling or trash. The place I work now has "recycling" containers at every desk, but you're supposed to get up and throw trash in a centrally based trash can. Of course, the recycling containers get used for trash, because people don't want to get up and walk, so basically the program doesn't work.

Then, it's basically just getting the company as a whole to mandate it-- look into the dumpsters like flvegan said. Housekeeping staff must also be trained to pick up recycling as well as trash. But it's pretty easy if you can get "buy-in" from somebody at the top of the organization.
