If I hang it up outside, how do birds know to move in?
:dunce:

1. Hang it high!!
Of course the birds will know what to do!

Unless you have homeless pelicans or peacocks near by!!

8. No pelicans or peacocks
just little birds, most of them brown, I think (you can tell I'm a nature freak, huh?). Some birds did build a nest in a tree outside my kitchen window, so maybe I'll put it near there.

thanks!

3. Once bought a bat house and left it leaning on a shed.

Tried to find it 10 years later and the ivy had gobbled it up or something.

Nature will be on your side....

5. Google "birdhouse + location", or some such combo.
You should be able to find out which birds would use
your type of house, and where they would prefer it
to be placed.

6. Is it a "real" aka usable birdhouse rather than a decorative one?
Thought I'd just mention that because there is a difference.

10. uh, oh. I dunno.
I guess if I hang it up and no birds move in, then it is decorative! :)

7. Them birds is smart!
They knows what a house is fer!

When I lived in the wilds of Florida, toads would take up residence in the shoes we left outside. We realized this when my husband left his muddy shoes outside, and then washed them the next day in the washer. He opened the door of the washer to find two dead toads, which was quite traumatizing for my amphibian-loving daughter,a nd on Thanksgiving day! After that any shoes left outside were thoroughly checked before use.

11. I don't have a bird feeder
because although I like birds, I don't like all of the other critters that I'm afraid might be attracted to food left outside. I didn't know if I had to do something to the house (like put food in it) to invite the birds in (a tiny little "for rent" sign?)

:hi:

12. Sell it at a yard sale
That's what generally happens to all the junk I pick up at charity events and auctions.

13. how decorative is it? You should post a photo and let us all vote on best use for it.
Certain birds like certain types of birdhouse styles.

I love the birds, but with a neighborhood full of kitties I don't feel it is fair to the birdies to tempt them into my yard. My cats are currently not allowed out but when they are, birdies better beware.

I would consider a bat shelter though for insect reduction and because I really like bats
