1. Some are good, some are not.
They cut little bits out of some episodes which I find very annoying. The Doomsday Machine has been vastly improved with the new FX.

On the other hand, Spock's Brain and the space hippies episodes are beyond salvation.

2. They did a pretty good job.
The old special effects were inconsistent and looked like they were done in someone's basement. Painful to watch.

Now, at least, I can tell whether the Enterprise is using phasers or torpedoes without having to guess.

The most amusing user commentary snippet is this:

- In fact, I'd actually prefer it if Paramount released the original episodes with NO upgrades of any kind (just clean the negatives and then scan them in High Definition). I liked the model effects/ hand-painted landscapes that were used in Next Generation and the Original Series. I'd like to have them on disc, albeit in HD.

Assuming he's telling the truth; digital restoration involves scanning the medium, saving it in some archival quality format, and then mastering onto the end-user format. The negs were already cleaned, but how many scratches, dust, flicker had been removed is another story... Even the TOS collector sets, which were reimaged, still had numerous bits of speck here and there, and still looked grainy (16mm film?)...
