1. Whatever they call it, it's a beautiful sight to see it when it's blooming!
Edited on Sat Nov-03-07 05:22 PM by Radio_Lady
In the U.K., we saw lots of it from the trains. It's truly a gorgeous plant!

2. Why don't they call it that?
I didn't know rapeseed and canola were the same thing.

See, this is why I come to DU....for the edumicational value.

20. You are unpatriotic. CANola is CANadian, it shows the CAN-do spirit of the great white north!
Fuck that, FREE QUEBEC!

8. Yeah, a bit of a marketing problem with that one.
"Canola" cleaned it up nicely.

"Chilean sea bass" sounds tastier than Patagonian toothfish too. ;)

12. Wasn't Canola oil mostly used as an industrial lubricant until it was genetically
modified to be edible by humans?

13. Yes and no.
Rapeseed oil used to mostly be a lubricant, and it was indeed genetically modified. But that was done by selective breeding to remove harsh chemicals, not by gene splicing. This modified version is Canola: Canadian Oil, Low Acid.

21. It does not seem possible to find non gmo contaminated canola in N. America
Canola or rapeseed is wind pollinated and thus all of it seems to have been contaminated. I avoid it like I avoid any soy products not from Japan where gmo's are forbidden. Corn oil is also lost. Safflower and sunflower oils are about the only safe veggie oils. Olive oil is still safe.

The English have clean rapeseed still as does the rest of Europe.
