do you have dishwasher?
i wash all my dishes by hand

wondering how many DUers have dishwashers vs. those who wash them all by hand.

it came up because i pulled a spoon out today and there was a giant piece of spinach stuck to it. ick

i wanted to post a poll, but i'm no doner so, the options are

(A) have a dishwasher and don't sully my precious hands with washing anything

(2) wash everything by hand

(D)(a) where does this lounge newbie get off posting this nonsense?

thanks for your consideration

1. No dishwasher here
But I'd have one if I could afford to do so. I certainly don't think less of people who *do* have them.

2. (9) Other.
We have a dishwasher, and I run it when it's completely full.

Items that don't go in the dishwasher:
Large/oddsized items
Mixing bowls
Knives (other than flatware)
Pots & pans
Plastic storage containers
Spatulas/turners/pizza wheels

15. I have a dishwasher
But I wash all my dishes by hand first. This is only because I am obsessive compulsive and it's one of my many quirks. Sometimes I run the dishwasher twice or thrice if I've left them in the sink too long.
I can see germs, but that's for another thread...
lol...I wish this wasn't true...I'm baring my soul.

16. That's what Pots and Pans and the extra detergent cup is for.
I use P&P every time because I've got a little of the cleanliness OCD in me, too. P&P gives it an extra heated wash on my Kenmore, so it seems like good policy. But I'm also lazy, so I don't pre-rinse or pre-wash by hand. That is a waste of water, time, and money.

While I'm washing items that I don't put in the dishwasher, I wash off what's going in the dishwasher too.

There's nothing I hate more than picking up a fork or glass and finding something nasty dried on it.

I put everything in mine but I did learn that you aren't suppossed to put real silver in the same holders as flatware.... it tarnishes it , who knew??

21. Yes.
:hi: I put everything in it---pots & pans, etc. If there is something that HAS to be washed by hand, I do it, but other than that....

The reason I detest washing dishes by hand is that when I was growing up, my sister and I were the "galley slaves" whenever Mom had a dinner party or some other event that called for food. Instead of being able to visit with the friends and family there, Sis and I were required to clean up. We had a dishwasher, but Mom never wanted anyone to use it. :grr: To this day, I would rather scrub toilets than to wash dishes by hand.

Also, I cannot understand people who wash their dishes before they put them in the dishwasher. I scrape dishes well before putting them in the dishwasher, but IT'S A DISHWASHER. It washes dishes. IMO it's there to do the washing. :)

24. (c) ) OTHER :I have one about 25 years old, it does a fairly good job but I don't
wash my Caphalon pans in it, or other really large things. Some plastics jump around in it too. Newer dishwashers have clever loading arrangements to help avoid that. I am looking forward to replacing mine soon. My current one does not have a mini waste disposal in it either and I want to upgrade for that alone.

I would never wash my Caphalon pans in the dishwasher, not good for the inside of the pans, but they clean up so easily it doesn't really matter.

I like the idea that my stuff is being washed in water hotter than my hands can tolerate and I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE those new little pillow shaped things with a combo of gel and dry dishwasher soap in them ...my dishes are a LOT cleaner with that stuff.

FWIW, most people who have one still have things they have to do by hand..like iron skillets, fine dishes, really large things, etc.

My old dishwasher doesn't get everything out of my cheapie pans either. I usually have to SOS pad them beforehand, and the washer is mainly for sanatizing them.

41. watch for a sale at Kohl's if there is one near you, when they offer
the 12 piece set with a free bonus piece (mine was a 5 quart chili pot) on sale. Then be sure you have one of those 10 thousand % off scratch off things they love to send out and get an additional 15 , 20 or whatever % off. Those are on Kohl's website too. Target has it at a good price too. I love mine. and yes I got the non stick, with the see through lids.

I just don't put it in there at all. I have some pots which do ok in the DW and of course the Corning Ware .They just take up too much room and it isn't good for many of the surfaces of cookware. Iron skillets, etc would rust all over.

27. Nope
Everything by hand, don't have a dish-washer. I don't mind, I find doing dishes rather relaxing (don't ask me about doing laundry, though). The only thing I'd like it for is the ability to heat items such as my meat cutting board to temps higher than my hands can tolerate.

I get all the food off the dishes first and then run them through the dishwasher. I believe the water is hotter than I can stand doing them by hand and it seems more santitary to me. It probably isn't, it just seems so.

31. Don't have a place to put one.
There's not that much room in my small kitchen to put in a dishwasher, plus our water is unreliable (well water from a well some distance away and when our neighbors use the water ours goes byebye) so we've got no choice but to wash by hand.

Mark.

Edited on Sun Nov-04-07 12:44 PM by supernova
I love my DW. :loveya:

It's a roll a way because this kitchen was built before they put in built in appliances like dishwashers. Mine is actually out on my mud room and I attach the hose to the utility sink out there.

Like NW Chick, I stick everything in there. Although, I'm careful not to over pack it, that's how you get dishes that aren't clean. The only thing I wash by hand are antique china and crystal, and anything that has decoration that the detergent could wash off.

I also like it because everything comes out sanitized. And for dinner parties, I can warm plates. :-)

edit: And if something doesn't get clean the first time, I can always leave it in there and run it through a 2nd time.

Did without for about a year when the old one broke, discovered that my Inner Slob really came out when confronted with having to wash dishes by hand (I avoided it altogether until it became absolutely necessary), finally replaced the broken one and now I'm happy.

You will take my dishwasher away when you pry it from my cold dead hands.

44. Dishwashers are more environmentally-friendly than washing by hand. It doesn't
have anything to do with being lazy or "not sullying hands."

I'd be just has happy to wash the dishes, because the hot water makes my arthritic hands feel good.

But doing so uses more energy than the dishwasher does.

Not to mention the dishwasher's ability to further heat the water to sanitize the dishes. You can't touch water as hot as it gets in a dishwasher.

Better for the environment, better for your family.

46. I LOVE my dishwasher!
I scrape off the plates, but that's about it...

It really does a fantastic job de-greasing the baking dishes!

It's a very satisfying feeling to load it up and walk away...

Of course, there are things that should never go in it...

Sharp knives, wooden utensils and like that...

I wash those by hand, and use the rinse water to wash down my countertops afterwards...

I've been doing it for over 40 years, and it works!

Not very practical not having a Dishwasher...Of course you still you have to wash stuff by hand. It's just nice to blast away 15 glasses and 20 sippy cups, 10 plates, 5 bowls, and, all the silverware with the push of a button. And if you're really lazy you never have to unload just keep piling them into the sink until it's time to fire up the DW again.
