Today's video games: C-R-U-D
Inventiveness and ingenuity (Centipede, Donkey Kong, Asteroids, Space Invaders, Sinistar, etc.) have been replaced by mindless violence and lack of originality (Halo, Grand Theft Auto, ultra-realistic sports games). Incredible graphics don't a quality video game make.

Agree or disagree?

4. And filled with malware!
BIOSHOCK contains a rootkit and requires constant internet activation or else it'll stop working. Plus there's a limited number of re-activations before it won't let you.

Guess what goes back tomorrow...

The original video games were a matter of finding a pattern to succeed the levels... though the text based adventure games required intellect...

7. By market %, that holds true, but game volume has increased
Plenty of good games have been made recently.
Disciples 2, Europa Universalis 2, Giant Citizen Kabuto, Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic, Call of Duty, Homeworld, Sacrifice, Alice, and others.

8. I agree you haven't played video games in the last twenty years.
Even the old ones.

Go ahead, play Halo or GTA and then go play Centipede or Sinistar.

Old games were terrible.

9. you need a Wii
Lots of classic arcade style games for it and really fun with their interactive style controllers. I don't care for video games in general until I tried my brother's Wii. I immediately bought one off eBay after playing it for a night.

12. Give the 'Ratchet & Clank' series a try
Edited on Wed Nov-07-07 03:33 PM by Rob H.
Those are some of the most fun videogames I've ever played. The weapons alone are a riot--the latest one for the PS3 (the others in the series are for the PS2) has a weapon called The Groovinator that fires a hovering disco ball that distracts your enemies and makes them dance long enough for you to take 'em out. All of them so far have been chock-full of stuff like that.

And then there's 'Psychonauts' for Xbox, which is also a blast to play, as well as having a great story behind it.

13. I agree and disagree
A lot of really good games don't exist anymore because the industry is so mainstream. However, I think GTA and Halo are both amazing games that blur the line between games and art.

The Wii is a pretty fun system also.

14. Completely disagree.
Modern video games have things like a plot, vivid characters, and gameplay that isn't repetitive. How is Grand Theft Auto a lack of originality? Especially in the last game, it offered an immersive, incredibly expansive world. Games that have built upon that same model have only improved it (see God of War).

There is no plot in Centipede, no character development in Asteroids ... how are those games even in the same league as modern ones, much less the same ballpark?

I certainly grant you that they may have been interesting in their time, but come on now! It's like saying you can't abide calculators and refuse to give up your abacus.
