what is it about cellphones that makes people compulsively fingerfuck them
for the duration of a bus ride?

we're talking at least 20 - 30 minutes here. just sitting there, playing with a cellphone.

are they THAT interesting? is microscopic content viewing THAT compelling?

1. Because those people are useless fucking morons.
Or, I should say, not totally useless - thank God we have them, so that we have someone who's satisfied being a fourth tier secretary, telemarketer, middle management, or other shit job that leads only to nothingness and complete erasure of one's existence in the universal history for lack of having made any impact on anything or anyone.

Without the ignorant proles, the world would cease to function for those who dare to excel.

(Jesus, that sounds Ayn Randian)

6. i don't know who you are
that's a question i cannot answer.

but, with so many good books, scenery (if you live somewhere where they have interesting scenery and you can see it from the bus), and just plain being aware of your surroundings, i can't see fiddling with a phone for anything other than making a phone call.

and don't get me started on motherfuckers who have loud conversations on trains and buses.

grrrrrr

I've taken the same bus every day for the past four years, i think i know what's out the window of the S line. My phone is my computer on the bus, i could read the paper or i could read du. What's the difference?

there's about 5 or 6 buses i can take to work. or walk.

or the train.

i've seen many of these places thousands of times, but each time i let my mind notice stuff, there is some curious architectural detail, a washed out 1920s billboard, or SOMETHING that i notice.

i just can't get into playing with little shiny boxes.

plus, i've reached a point where i don't need loud music, passive viewing activity, or distraction ALL the time.

i can even meditate on the bus, except when some asshole is yelling into his phone.

5. They could at least be discreet
Cell phones could be stored in the pocket. Hands could be inserted into the pocket to caress and fondle them. Oh, yeah. There's the spot. Don't look at me if it bothers you. Oh. Yeah!

11. "what would happen if i was alone with my thoughts?"
"what would happen if one day i woke up and no longer had that yearning to purchase stuff i don't really need? would i be confronted with emptiness or joy? do i even know who i am?

sadly, i wonder if people even ask themselves these questions. i just see a parade of assclowns posing and preening as if their day to day life were a reality teevee show.

seriously, the studied sloppiness accented with a charming, quirky bright red scarf.

oversized sunglasses and tousled hair. young men wearing what looks like jeans made for women.

i see all this meaningless precocity. and i can understand life as art. but emulating the stylized consciousness of television identity is not any real art.

16. I thought of that while watching that Fox reality show about the bands.
Every one of the bands, except the two good ones (the big band and the bluegrass guys) had The Look, for whatever style of music they were doing - the right cliche hair style, the right cliche clothing, the right cliche stances while standing and sitting around waiting to go on stage, the right cliche movements while playing, the right cliche speaking style when talking to people.

Not genuine or honest in any of them.

Except the big band - they were all dressed alike, but it was just black suits and red ties. A little trite, maybe, but not a poseur style by any means. And the bluegrass guys were just dressed like regular folk.

Everyone, else, though was just emulating the stylized consciousness of television identity.

And since all those bads were awful, I kept mentally shouting at the TV, "Maybe if you'd spent all the time you wasted perfecting your 'look' practicing your art, you wouldn't suck so bad".

But, no, it's the 21st century - no one fucking cares if you sound good. The studio engineers will fix that, and in concert you can just wave your arms around while a septic tape actually does the music. The important thing is to have The Look.

37. I can tell you
there's just as much good and shitty music now as there ever was. I don't get the perception that somehow everything that happened musically in the 60's and 70's was gold.

35. It's not interconnectivity. It's co-dependency. People these days
seem to need a constant companion...

Luckily, I'm comfortable enough in my own skin that I don't feel compelled to contact people unless I actually have something to say.

just kidding, I usually read a book on the bus which leads to some really interesting conversations.

I was reading Al Gores book, The Assault On Reason. I am currently reading, Einsteins Violin which is an awesome book written by a wonderful person, composer Jospeh Eger.

Man, I keep fearing that I might get a job which requires me to have a cell phone. The absolute LAST thing I want is to be reachable wherever I go. I don't know why anybody would want that tether. How anybody can see anything on those tiny screens (or want to) is also beyond me.

Yesterday on the bus I had some numbnuts behind me beeping away on his fucking cell phone. At least turn down the volume, asshole.
