My transmission is slipping
1998 Windstar - I've had it two years. Yes, I know it's a lemon with a "self-destructing transmission".

I first noticed accelerating around corners that it was "catching" a bit, but I thought it was tire slippage on gravel. Now I don't dare accelerate heavily 'cause it falls out of gear in first. I just about got killed yesterday pulling in front of a bus.

Any chance it's just low on tranny fluid - again? I'm hopeless under the hood. Despite being shown several times, I STILL can't find the oil filter. It's hidden under the engine somewhere. Hence, I definitely can't find the transmission fluid hole and understand if you're going to fsck with it, you may as well change the filter as well.

How? :wtf:

2. Jiffy Lube?
They do transmission fluid changes, too. Costs about $60. And, yeah — when you change transmission fluid, you should change the filter. It's not an every-other-time thing like with engine oil. (Though changing the crankcase filter every time is a good idea, too.)

But, I'd be concerned by your "again" about why the tranny's losing fluid, if that's the case.

3. The trans fluid dipstick should look like the oil dipstick, but a different color.
The transmission should be warm when you check it. Changing the transmission filter is a pain in the ass, too, btw. Have you had them changed sincy you bought the Windstar?

6. change the fluid and filter. usually that means dropping the pan underneath.
pull the dipstick and check the level. Also see if it smells burnt and what color it is. Should be a nice red.
