All you old folks who can remember the 1960s,
help me remember this. There was a diet supplement of some sort - kind of like a shake if I remember right, but a drink - that was around then and very popular. My dad used to joke about some guy at his work who would eat his lunch and then drink it afterwards and think that was going to get rid of the calories he just ate and they tried to explain to him it was meant to be in lieu of food and not in addition to. I am thinking the name had cal in it but I may be wrong. So what was it??? Driving me crazy.

1. Not sure but I remember my mom popping those "Aids" appetite suppressants
An unfortunately named product, as it turns out. I would sometimes sneak 'em out of her purse, because, although they were sort of disgusting tasting, they were still chewy and kinda chocolately.

24. Those were "Ayds", not "Aids", but sounded just the same.
Awful stuff...purely revolting.

2. Was it SlimFast?
I just Googled it, and although the site didn't say how old this product is, it did say you used it to substitute for meals...

7. Yes, it was Metracal.
I used to take it, but it didn't do anything to help me lose weight.

8. Don't think it was a diet drink.
I guessed at this as I have a book called For Spacious Skies by Scott Carpenter, the second US astronaut to orbit the earth. He was in training as John Glenn's backup. They would both be in the training simulator for hours on end. The book said that they would not take dinner breaks, just 10-15 minute periods for some soup or a can of Metracal, then back to the simulator. I assume that it was a type of protein drink, not a diet drink.

13. No, it was a diet drink.
But it tasted a lot better with a scoop of ice cream.

Metracal was the first weight-loss shake product, adapted from baby formula by Mead Johnson Nutritionals. It was wildly successful. The company also marketed Metracal cookies.

19. I remember my sister bringing it home. It was going to solve all her problems.
She was a pudgy teen, even until early twenties. Now in her 60s she's very slim, great health.

4. I remember something like that but can't remember the name.
I do remember Ayds, the "diet candy" that was supposed to suppress your appetite. One of my mom's friends ate it like it really WAS candy. :yoiks: It kept her hopped up on goofballs most of the time. :P

12. I drank it in the 70's I think.
It came in cans or mix.

I lost about 50 pounds when I was a teenager on that stuff!

I couldn't find any pictures of it.....

14. This is a terrible generalization and stereotype
I may be old (seasoned?), but that doesn't automatically mean I remember a lot about the '60's.

With all the scientific experimentation on drugs and alcohol, there are a few gaps. Then there was the draft, opening up a new world of alcohol and drugs.

Just saying.

17. Hmmmm
Perhaps I have a more clear headed remembrance of the 60s--of course, I was pre-pubescent at the time. :) I mostly remember being in love with Davy Jones and Mark Lindsay, the Man from UNCLE, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Star Trek, and The Wild Wild West. But no sex, drugs or rock and roll. (Well, maybe a little of that last one. ;))

18. And on the flip side, does remembering the 60's make you old?
I remember most (well, some, anyway) of the 60's, but I don't think of myself as old. It's just mind over matter. If you don't mind, it don't matter.

;-)

Edited on Wed Nov-07-07 08:36 PM by mcscajun
Before Slim-Fast, there was Metracal; developed from baby formula, it was supposed to Sub for real food and help you lose weight.

One of my older sisters had this garbage around for a while. UGH.
