Has anybody here had a Christmas in Rome trip?
I'm thinking about a family trip, but not religious, just cultural and fun -- shopping, food, something for 7, 10 and 13 year old girls. I googled Christmas in Rome tours but they were far too long and went to lots of other places besides Rome. I just think it would be cool to see what it's like at Christmas over there.

3. I'm looking for tours to Europe. Is Cosmos a good company?
Do you have a website address?

I've been on Smithsonian and Overseas Adventure Travel trips and am going on a Go Ahead trip to No. Italy in May.

On my next trip to Rome I want to go to the Piazza Farnese, which is now the French Embassy. My interest is art; I am eager to see the Carraci ceiling, an art wonder of the Baroque era. They do conduct tours (you have to reserve ahead) but they're either conducted in French or Italian, no English. Since my Italian is now better than my college French, I'd take that one. It just sounds so cool...

2. No, but of the Christmases in London (Dickensian), Nuremburg (markets), and Rome,
I'd go to Rome ONLY for the whole religious thang, with midnight Mass at St. Peter's and all.

5. Well, I've been to the Vatican but mostly for the art. The crowds intimidate me.
I do see some Christmas trips to England and Austria, not so much Rome.

If you have Catholic colleges near you, they may have trips where you stay in a convent or monastery that are devoted to hospitality at a very cheap rate, but of course, when you are there you can just walk around and see the wonders around you. I wandered into San Luigi della Francese, a modest church, and there was Caravaggio's 3 St. Matthew masterpieces, including my favorite "The Calling of St. Matthew." Wow!

4. I have done Christmas in Holland, Belgium, and Germany
now that was a fun time. Make sure that you are in Rotterdam for New Years, they shoot off more fireworks in the streets than do the armies of some small countries in war. It was sheer insanity.

6. Have you tried ricksteves.com?
They have 7-day tours of Rome only for what seems to be a good price.
