Cat owners...you have seen this, right?.
http://www.catgenie.com/

CatGenie is unlike all litter boxes.
It works like a cat box, acts like a toilet, and cleans
like a modern washing appliance.

1) CatGenie requires a one-time, simple do-it-yourself hook up to cold water and an electric outlet.
2) CatGenie uses litter-like Washable Granules to satisfy kitty’s need to dig and cover.
3) When kitty goes, the liquid drains away from the Granules so only the waste gets flushed.
4) When cleaning starts, the GenieHand scoops out the solid waste, which gets liquefied for safe, easy removal.
5) Fresh water fills the basin and the GenieHand scrubs and scours cat box and Granules.
6) The cat-safe SaniSolution deconta-minates the Granules and cat box of germs and odors.
7) Liquefied waste and sudsy water get flushed down toilet or drain and safely out of the home.
8) A hot-air blower completely dries the Granules and cat box for kitty’s comfort.

1. That looks really cool!
If I had a cat, I would wait until it came down in price. Nearly $300 for a litter box seems a bit steep to me.

2. But if it flushes...it has to hook into plumbing out...somehow?

That's more complicated that tying into a cold water line.

Plus, if my girl Isis saw her litter box scooping itself, swirling and sudzing I doubt she'd ever go near it again.

I think, automatic would be a bad idea for most cat households.

3. My cat
would flush it all day long. He runs from anywhere in the house to watch the water swirling in the bowl when he hears a flush.

4. We bought one about six months ago....
And it works exactly as designed! It has a motion sensor so the machine doesn't start the cleaning process until 5 or so minutes after the last cat has used the "litter" compartment. Our cats were reluctant to use it at first but within a few days, they were using it... We've been very pleased with the product, but two of our three cats are elderly (about 18 years old) and they still have some issues with using it. I think they just don't like the larger pellets as opposed to finer grain scoopable cat litter. The younger cat though uses it quite consistently.

We did have one issue with our Persian's longer fur clogging the drain, but CatGenie sent us a larger version of the part that turns to siphon the dirty water to the drain and we haven't had a problem since. I think they now just ship all units with the larger part...

As for the question above about how difficult it is to install, once we adapted our laundry washer machine's drain to hold both the drains for the washer and the CatGenie, the installation took all of 10-15 minutes. We just had to buy a Y-shaped PVC connector so that both drains could work together. But that issue aside, my husband had it ready to go within a half-hour of assembly and installation.

We didn't bother with the toilet/bathroom install since our hall bath doesn't have the room for it and that form of installation definitely looked more complicated than hooking it up in the laundry room... A cleaning cycle takes about 20 minutes and the detergent solution has a light, clean scent that carries through the house.

6. The s.o. showed me the ad, but we can't afford one right now
and we have 6 cats, so we'd probably need two. I'm glad to hear it works, though! How big a cat will it "seat"? Plato and his brother Socrates ring in at a combined 40 lbs.

7. My oldest cat is about 18 pounds...
And he does fit pretty well in the bowl area. Though I do have to admit that the pellet bowl was a bit smaller than I was expecting. I'd say it's the round version of a medium to large cat litter pan. It definitely has more room than the litter compartment of those LitterMaid automated litter boxes, but not quite as much room for movement as our large sized litter box. We do not have the optional hood for the bowl area so I couldn't tell you if they'd likely fit in a CatGenie with a hood.

We have three cats and so far it's working out just fine between them. But yes, with six cats you'd definitely need two machines and likely both will need to be on three daily cleaning cycles. The refill cartridges for the detergent are a little pricey if you machine runs frequently through the day (since you'll be ordering them more frequently than households with only one or two cats), but the cleanliness and no litter odor are great trade-offs. The little pellets do get tracked through the house as well, but at least they're clean unlike litter.

The CatGenie company also includes some great pointers on how to transition your cats from a regular litter box to the CatGenie. My husband learned the hard way to actually listen to those instructions after he pulled the stubborn guy thing of "they're going to use this or nothing since I paid so much money... blah, blah"... We had to follow the transition instructions a few weeks later when the oldest staged a rebellion and began peeing at various locations in the house without his usual litter box. That was fun, not.
