Coon Dawg Vat

It was the summer of '65 and my air national guard squadron was at our two week summer encampment in Gulfport, Mississippi.

We had Saturday off and were planning to party down that night.
My buddy said "We need a Coon Dawg Vat."
"What's that?"

"Well, my granddaddy said it's something they used to dip the coon dogs in to get rid of ticks and fleas. Back then it was mostly moonshine. But it has evolved."
"So...what's in it?"

"One fifth each of bourbon, vodka, gin, and rum. A big bottle of ginger ale. One beer. And a couple of Alka Seltzers."
"One beer?"
"Some of the guys like beer. I throw that in to make them happy"
"What's the Alka Seltzers for?"
"Hangover preventive."
"Oh...OK."

We 'borrowed' the orange juice machine from the mess hall to mix it in.
Remember the ones with the plexiglass tank that continually sprayed the orange juice into the top to keep it mixed?
Yeah that one.
It was the perfect mixing and dispensing vehicle.
I think we had to cancel flying the next day.

There was a toast that accompanied the consumption, but modesty forbids its reproduction here.
It was a bit...um...rough?
