How many tires should I purchase?
My car has 20,000 miles and the tires are in great shape (with the exception of one). I do rotate them every tome I get my oil changed. But one of those bad boys has a slow leak and I know it needs to be replaced.

I have never had to purchase tires before. What do you experts recommend? Buy only one tire to replace the bad one? Replace two? Replace all four? I don't want to get screwed over at the tire store by the salesman.

I'm looking for real advice here.

1. Are they radials?
If so you need to replace two.

Maybe I better talk to the dealer.

2. If the one with the leak is otherwise sound

why not just have it plugged?

Edit: If it's a slow leak, it may just need a new valve stem.

I'd take it to a tire-repair place first.

3. How's the tread on them?
And are they showing signs of dry rot? How old are they?

In general, they shouldn't need replacing at 20K miles, but.... YMMV!!!!

5. They're only three years old.
And there is no dry rot.

11. Then if the tread is still good....
and you can't get the bad one plugged, I'd say just the one.

Unless you're the kind of person that HAS to have a matching set...

10. I say two.
I had one bad tyre on the minivan and couldn't afford four new ones, so I broke out the piggybank and afforded two new tyres for the van.

Now it's time for me to buy two more.

Mark.

12. Have the slow leak patched up - cost you about $15. And tires always replace in pairs -
the two front tires should always be the same age, and the two back tires should always be the same age.

But as to the slow leak: dude, that can be patched. Your tires won't need replacement until 60,000 miles if you have an average car (sports cars and heavy duty trucks probably sooner, some other cars longer, depending on the tire). To replace tires at 20,000 miles is an expensive proposition that should be considered ONLY if the tire dudes tell you the tire is utterly unpatchable AND you have no desire to spend a minute or two every few weeks to make sure it's full of air.

13. Just get it patched man
Costs about $15 and is way cheaper than getting a new tire. I've got 65k miles on my car and the originals are still going. Consistent tire rotation is key to long life. You've still got many years left on those tires!
