Those two are the definitive WWII documentaries!

We have both of them on DVD, and every now and then, we get them back out to watch and weep and celebrate all over again...

Victory At Sea may be a bit "rah rah America," but it used the footage right and had one HELLUVA music score! :-)

3. It is very "rah rah" indeed!

But the score by Richard Rodgers is kick-ass!

I especially loved the scene at the end of the movie where we saw a big banner stretched over some shoreline cliffs on the east coast...

I think it said something like "Well done...Welcome home..."

It made me cry...

4. I used to watch "The World At War" when I was growing up

My Dad and I would stay up late to watch it when I was like 7 or 8. I was a little military history buff, used to read all about Rommel and whatnot. Brutal.

Now military history just bores me to tears. The massive military history sections in our bookstores are a monumental joke.

Whatever it is, it's my favorite.

Favorite scene: The hero Lt. is sitting in the doorway of his drop plane... camera moves away and pans forward, showing the D-Day invasion fleet and the armada of paratrooper planes, the English Channel glistening below. And the awesome music. Wow.

that are good, that show up on the History Channel and other cable networks.

I like Quentin Aenensons full story, as told in the documentary "A Fighter Pilot's Story", quite a good film. He was feature in Burn's film, as well.

8. There was a series made during WW2 called "Why We Fight."

LOTS of great work, including a lot of good work by famous directors.

"Memphis Belle" (not the Hollywood movie decades later,) really "put you there" during a bombing mission, and was riveting.

It was the one show that my Dad and I watched together even though it came on after my regular bed time. The focus was primarily on Britain and among other things assured that this Irish-American would always have a profound respect for the grit and courage of the English.
