Conundrum - do I buy a new guitar with whammy bar, camera, or Sol Lewitt artwork?
Or something else?

I have some extra cash from saving up over the year, and I'd love a new guitar with a whammy bar - I have a Strat I'm looking at.

But my old digital camera, a $600 job from year 2000, is a stinking piece of shit - it has served me well, but it's falling apart and doesn't work well and only has what was the maximum at the time I bought it: 2 megapixels. I do take a lot of photos, and so I could use a new one and I would love to have one with the 6, 7, or 8 megapixels that are standard now - but on the other hand, what I really want is an SLR digital camera, and I don't have that money yet: I could continue saving.

But there's some Sol Lewitt artwork going up for auction soon, and I'd almost kill to have one of them.

Or, I could use the money to pay off more on my car, or put it in my portfolio.

Or, I could also give it, or part of it, to my new goddaughter (6 months old) as the beginning of her 529 (I think it's 529) College Fund.

Damn.

Help me, please!

My heart keeps going out for the guitar, but I already have two (one acoustic and one electric) and so don't really need another one, but the electric is a real cheapo one, and to have a Strat - that would be cool! But I also just started learning this year - maybe it's too early for that nice of a guitar?

I don't know.

1. Well, you've blown it on the artwork. Now we're all interested in it.
And will bid accordingly.

Cameras are always coming down in price. Try CostCo for things that are under $200.00 and have around 10MP.

I can't give advice on guitars.

Your Goddaughter will be a servant in a Republican Pleasure Dome, like the rest of us, so use your money on yourself, now, while you can.

2. Forget the artwork, cameras are
cheap. Get the Strat, bay-bee. Personally, I have a Strat plus, and I, not surprisingly, love it. You need a decent electric guitar. Then you can keep it 4evah.

:headbang:

Stop eating/give blood to fund the goddaughter's 529 and your portfolio :hi:

3. How much money is not much?
SLRs have gone down in price significantly in the last 18 months.

4. They're still running in the $800+ range, though. That's a little rich for me,
especially they will likely be $600 next year.

Hard to say, though - film SLRs never really got much below the $700 mark, so the digital ones might not, either.

10. megapixels aren't that important once you pass a certain number
like, 8 :)

the 400D does have some very nice features that I'd want if I was going to buy another crop-sensor body.

It's 5D or bust for me.

16. Great place - you'd love it! Not just for the stuff they have, but the conveyor belt.
I could watch it for hours.

5. What I always do: delay the enjoyment and pay off debts.
Of course, I rankle under debt so paying it off is a sort of enjoyment for me. Now the only debt I have left is my substantial student loan.

7. how much would the guitar set you back?
the canon rebel xt is a really decent DSLR which has gotten extremely affordable. i love mine, and popular photography just gave it a big push, saying it's the hottest deal out there. amazon is selling it with the lens kit for just $500, and i bet you could even find a better deal out there.

11. Of course! I didn't think of that - I'll just get a new cell phone that has guitar and camera
functions.

I'm sure they have one.

Probably got one with a cappucino maker in it, too.
