Most obscure joke you've ever seen on "Sesame Street"?
I had a few just this morning while my son was watching the "Elmo's World" segment. This morning's subject was noses. During the portion where Elmo asks questions of a nose, it was very clearly supposed to be Jimmy Durante (size and shape of the nose, the voice, and the hat). While watching The Nose Channel, the announcer stating that one of the upcoming programs would be "The Most Happy Smeller," a clear reference to the Frank Loesser musical "The Most Happy Fella."

So, what are some of your favorite obscure jokes from "Sesame Street"?

1. Ooh, ooh, I got one ready to go.

Remember REM's "Shiny Happy People" song from the 80's? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbGSDkvh8B0

Whelp, look what they did with it--http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7_xzAWLv-g

The weird part is, I can't decide which version of Kate Pierson I like better...

2. One of my favorites, but not too obscure
at the end of the show, night is falling, and you hear all the characters saying goodnight to each other as lights go out. the camera finally ends up on a manhole cover, and you hear "goodnight, Ralphie boy!" (a reference to the Honeymooners, where Ralph's best friend was a sewer worker)

9. It could be that, or...
Maybe it's a reference to "The Walton's," where the lights in the house are going out and everyone is saying good night to each other. The oldest son is named John Boy, so invariably someone would say "Good night, John Boy."

Or maybe it's two cultural references in one?

3. Not quite on Sesame Street, but I remember the Muppets
Doing Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth"

Yes, one of the most famous anti-war songs of the Vietnam Era done by The Muppets.

11. In a related issue
Mr. Laurel recently bought the first seasons of Saturday Night Live on DVD. Jim Henson and co. did some of the shorts in between segments. It was a trip seeing Muppets making jokes about masturbation and smoking pot.

4. It was a Cookie Monster joke
Donald Rumsfeld is giving the president his daily briefing. He concludes by saying: "Yesterday, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed."

"OH NO!" the President exclaims. "That's terrible!"

His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands.

Finally, the President looks up and asks, "How many is a brazillion?"

 - that's the first time I've ever posted that joke!

5. They used to do some "Masterpiece Theatre" parodies on a "Monsterpiece Theatre" segment
I have no idea if they still do them, but the segments were hosted by Cookie Monster and they would do Sesame Street parodies of actual PBS Masterpiece Theater programming.

12. Also on Elmo's World
He always tunes his television to a channel relevant to the day's subject, such as "The Dog Channel" or whatever, and the tv shows a brief segment on the topic, typically with a song. When the segment ends, the tv says "stay tuned for..." and names one or two fictitious shows on the channel with puns in their names.

On the day that Elmo was thinking about food, the tv urged the viewer to "stay tuned for The Last Taco in Paris," which may actually be even dirtier than the film that it was punning!
