I think it means they don't "get it" or that they're not connecting with the issue at hand. In my opinion, it's about that person's perception of (or inability to perceive) the issue at hand. I guess it could also mean that the person sensing the disconnect could be disapproving of the way the issue was presented, but I definitely would take that phrase as a cue to present the issue or circumstances in a way that person could more easily relate to or understand. :hi:

The first time I hear the phrase was in regards to another person's accent. I guess in this context it meant...he did not like the accent? He did not understand the accent? He did not approve of the accent?

I like Rabrrrrr's take on it ,,,for this example :D

6. You're right, in that it's an inarticulate way to say,

"I don't get it. Help me out here."

But it doesn't necessarily reflect an intellectual deficiency on the part of the person who uses that phrase, Rabrrrrrr. Communication isn't just about understanding; it's also about being understood. Just because someone doesn't "connect" to what we're expressing does _not_ mean that person is deficient. It can also mean that we've poorly communicated the concept. But you knew that. :hi:

When I've heard that phrase used, it's meant "I don't agree", not "I don't understand".

I suppose it's possible, given the highest degree of bigotry, to disagree with a person's accent, but :sheesh: I certainly concede that there _are_ people who automatically disagree with or disapprove of those things they don't understand, but ya know, I have a real "disconnect" with that sort of thing. :hi:

It was the first time I had heard the phrase AND it made NO sense in that context. In further conversation with the person, it turns out that they were, indeed, a jerk.

I think (hindsight being 20-20) that they meant that the the accent was a big turn-off.

to synthesize something outside of his/her experience, in my opinion. Like I said to Rabrrrrrr, communication is about both understanding and being understood, and there are responsibilities on both parts. But to disagree with or disapprove of someone's accent is a value judgment entirely separate from ability to understand. It's sad that someone would disapprove of another person's accent. I speak three languages (not including dialects) and certainly, by local standards, my accent is hideous, but at least I'm trying. x(
