4. Shine On You Crazy Diamond
Edited on Mon Nov-12-07 06:53 PM by Mike03
It's hard to pick, but to me that is hands down the song that is the epitome of their work. It's just brilliant, and so moving and so inventive in terms of the chords. It's from the heart.

Second for me would be the song "Dogs" off of Animals.

After that, I might pick "Wish You Were Here" or "Mother".

5. hard to believe that album's 20 years old
I just got it again recently on vinyl. I saw the show September 16, 1987 in Cleveland. Still to this day the best concert I've ever been to.

So to answer your question, their best song's Brian Damage.

13. The Live8 version of "Comfortably Numb"
...it's my favorite Floyd song, but the vision of Waters, Gilmour, Mason & Wright on the same stage after a gazillion years was pretty awesome.

I also consider "Sorrow" from "Momentary Lapse" to be a favorite because of the way Gilmour's solo slams in after the words "There's an unceasing wind that blows through this night, and dust in my eyes that blinds my sight, and silence that speaks so much louder than words, of promises broken..."

:toast:

16. Comfortably Numb, followed by Cymballine and then Echoes
All completely different tunes - as if they were written by a different band even.

I do not like post-Waters Floyd. It is an abomination, in my opinion.

20. Hard to pick just one
Wish You Were Here always seems very powerful to me, and of course there's something celestial and sublime about Comfortably Numb.

Equally, the pairing of Southampton Dock and The Final Cut is hard to beat because IMO it crystalizes the anti-war theme prevalent later in Waters' time with Floyd, and it really captures and expands the damaged character archetype seen in The Wall.

Gosh gosh gosh. I just can't decide.

But I'll tell you this: it ain't Dogs of War, One Slip, or Take it Back, that's for damn sure.

21. Pigs (Three Different Ones)
Big man, pig man, ha ha charade you are.
You well heeled big wheel, ha ha charade you are.
And when your hand is on your heart,
You're nearly a good laugh,
Almost a joker,
With your head down in the pig bin,
Saying "Keep on digging."
Pig stain on your fat chin.
What do you hope to find.
When you're down in the pig mine.
You're nearly a laugh,
You're nearly a laugh
But you're really a cry.

Bus stop rat bag, ha ha charade you are.
You fucked up old hag, ha ha charade you are.
You radiate cold shafts of broken glass.
You're nearly a good laugh,
Almost worth a quick grin.
You like the feel of steel,
You're hot stuff with a hatpin,
And good fun with a hand gun.
You're nearly a laugh,
You're nearly a laugh
But you're really a cry.

Hey you, Whitehouse,
Ha ha charade you are.
You house proud town mouse,
Ha ha charade you are
You're trying to keep our feelings off the street.
You're nearly a real treat,
All tight lips and cold feet
And do you feel abused?
.....! .....! .....! .....!
You gotta stem the evil tide,
And keep it all on the inside.
Mary you're nearly a treat,
Mary you're nearly a treat
But you're really a cry.

Although the The Wall in its entirety, listened straight through, is their best piece of music.
