These chilluns with no contextual knowledge of the history of rock 'n roll. Clapton was the first, and the ultimate guitar god. The only equal in stature, in terms of impact, is Hendrix.

Cream. "Crossroads." 1968.

Richards is a great ..... rhythm guitarist. Page is a second-generation noodler.

13. oh, Hendrix was a great player.
and I talk about both him and Clapton in terms of impact on the history of rock. Probably no two guitarists has a greater impact on that history, in terms of influence on the art of the electric guitar.

Hendrix did lots of theatrical stuff, too, but he really could play.

Voodoo Chile.

named "Guitar Magazine's" Guitarist of the Year (1977 to 1981).

Now listen, and worship at the altar. Here he's playing a steel slide... good stuff.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJZD0GCkJ6Q

play close attention to the build-up towards the solo (the solo is great, but he really works his way to it). it's not just about moving your fingers quickly, it's about having something to say w/ those finger.

And his accoustic is pretty good too

I'm not saying that what he did wasn't any good... but as a player... no. He could make sounds from that thing that most people would never believe, but not because he was picking and strumming in melodic sequences.

He's the master of effect.

19. I'd put him in Gitmo on the basis of "Wonderful Tonight" alone
He's put that song on EVERY live CD and DVD he's released since it was first spawned on the "Slowhand" album (1977)...

THIRTY YEARS of hearing that P.O.S. song over and over and over again.

THREE FRIGGING DECADES!

The thumping sounds you hear on the track aren't percussion. They're bluesman Robert Johnson rolling over in his grave.

THIRTY YEARS, DAMMIT!

GOD, do I HATE that effing song.

I mentioned to my SO how I thought the song was lame and boy did I get an ear full. I do like his Bell Bottom Blues but I think that's because it was playing during my happy innocent high school days when the future looked bright and promising. Another song which played on and on that drove me up a wall was the "Cocain" song. I hated it.

42. Clapton has been MIA since...
..Derek and the Dominoes and even then he playing dual lead except for about two tracks.. Nothing he's done since comes close. However listen to The Blues Breakers (the Beano album), Cream, Blind Faith and His first solo album. (The 1973 Rainbow Concert Album has it's moments)

Best guitar player ever-Duane Allman-no contest!

Next I would put Jeff Beck, then Robbie Robertson.

47. Clapton is good, but we all know that the best is Esteban!
The greatest axe-man alive...plus he wears a cool hat.

52. You got that right
He'll even tell you so himself as he's pitching his crappy guitars on late night infomercials.

59. You mean Generic Clapton?
If boring mainstream music is the standard of what a great guitarist is then I guess he's super duper.I'll take someone like Agata Ichirou from Melt Banana or even Trey Azagthoth from Morbid Angel (not their biggest fan...but the mofo can play!).

And just once I'd like to go into a bar and NOT hear fuckin' Cocaine for the billionth time. :puke:

71. Have you people lost your fucking minds?????
First it's dissing Zep, now EC????

EC is part of the Trinity - Hendrix, Clapton, and _________ (your choice but NOT Steve Howe). I personally put SRV in.

73. I think it's both lack of taste and a tendency toward pretentiousness
The "snob appeal" of naming someone that no one has ever heard of, and proclaiming them the "best ever" (just look up a couple of posts, I've already forgotten the name because I never heard of 'em anyway).

There is a considerable amount of pretentiousness on DU.

76. Clapton has earned his seat at the table of the guitar gods, but
not at the head of it. Jimi is seated at the head, and most rightfully so. Seated next to Jimi? Stevie Ray.

77. My two: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That said, Clapton sux....

I've never liked him. And as a guitar player myself for 35 years, I've heard pretty much everything he's done.

Strangely, Clapton hisself would agree with me.

Another point: Technique has little to do with how great a rock guitarist is perceived to be. Any garden variety jazzer could play circles around most rock guitarists, but only the best of them could create something as beautiful as 'Little Wing'.

I had a copy of 'Live Cream, Vol. 2' back in the early Seventies. I traded it to a friend for 'Free Live'. I still have (and practically worship) it. Paul Kossoff, now there's a great blues rock (pop?) guitar player. Dead tooooo long. Sigh....
