I need a gift idea. I'm at a loss here.
I have a dear friend I've known for nearly 25 years now who lives two states away. We've always joked that if neither of us had re-married by the time he turned 50, we'd get married.

Well, that day is here the first week in December. Being lonely is no reason to get married, so a proposal is off the table. ;) He would agree. He's pretty conservative, so all the usual lounge ideas are out. :P

I have no idea what to get him for his 50th birthday. He's not looking forward to the day at all.

Any ideas? Usually gifts are easy for me to select. This one has me stumped.

1. Hm. You haven't given us enough to go on.
What are his interests and hobbies? What's your approximate budget? :hi:

24. That would be a nice gift.
There might be a few retired ones at Marana Airport in Arizona that you could pick up, cheap.

6. More info
he's restoring an old muscle car and hated giving up his motorcycle. I can spend about $50. I wanted to drive over and take him out to dinner, but fuel is too expensive to make the trip.

Does this help?

12. Yeah, I mean WTF is that?
Seriously.... How about a subscription to a car restoration magazine, I am sure they have such a thing. Or... some really important car part that you know he needs? Or... my family has resorted to giving each other charitable contributions to various things for Christmas, since we all feel like we've got enough "stuff," but that's not a very FUN idea unless he's of similar mind and has charities that are dear to his heart. Um... since it's a big 50, maybe one of those once-in-a-lifetime things like a ride in a hot air balloon or a skydive? (I have no idea how much that it would cost, though.)

That's all I can think of for now -- maybe more later.... :D

14. Old dear friends are hard to come by
What I did for my best friend on her birthday who lives only one state away is I surprised her by visiting. If you can't do that find something that will remind you both about what makes your friendship special.(movies,drink,music,) I know how you feel I miss my best buddy.

20. They certainly are...
I'm so grateful we've remained friends through raising children, divorces, me moving all over the country and all.

If you're around on December 29th, consider coming to a party just outside Columbus. It's a DU gathering.

:hi:

15. A few years ago, a friend of mine was bummed out upon reaching his 50th birthday
so I got him a lovely copy of Leaves of Grass. I don't know if that would work for your friend, but it perked mine right up.

29. OK, off the top of my head, here are some ideas:
* first off, garage stuff:
gift certificate to a local auto parts store, i.e, Kragen Auto Parts
a funny tshirt that reads "What Happens in the Garage stays in the Garage"
a cool neon light or sign to decorate his garage

* something symbolic and meaningful:
a beautiful upscale candle with a holder and a card indicating how much you appreciate the warmth and light he brings to your life

a nice windchime with a card wishing him the blessings of Harmony and Balance

* 5 things (for each decade of his life) of something cool:
i.e., 5 lovely coffee mugs for sharing coffee with friends; 5 pics of you and him together, over the years;

*then there's always the basics:
books, CD's, gift cards...

50 is the new 30, you know! ( saw that on a tshirt, too!) :hi:
