Alcohol consumed per capita map.

This map illustrates the average number of litres of alcohol consumed per capita based on data from 2003. The figures for individual states were taken from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and the figures for the other countries were taken from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

We beat every state in the union except for Vermont and Nevada, and equal with Minnesota, Rhode Island and Wyoming.

Damn Frogs got us totally beaten though. :evilfrown:

I'm a little surprised at Italy - only 8-9.

22. NH has state run tax free liquor stores, frequented by out of state visitors!
I think that would account for the higher sales in that state. ;)

16. NH and NV: Why so high?
Just a guess but I'm betting someone used sales volume to calculate per capita by state. NH sells alcohol more cheaply than its neighbors and has no bottle deposit law, thus generating lots of business from MA and ME. NH has a relatively low population total (~ 1.2 million.)

NV has Vegas and Reno where lots of alcohol is consumed by nonresidents.

36. About New Hampshire
New Hampshire has socialized booze. Unlike Masss, the state has a monopoly on the retail sale of hard liquor, and the state goes to absurd lengths to sell cut-rate hooch to our neighbors.

On Interstate 93, there is a large rest area in the town of Hooksett, about halfway between Manchester and Concord. Rte. 93 is the main north-south artery in the state, and it carries a lot of out of state traffic, with NASCAR fans heading to Loudon, skiers heading to the mountains, Quebecers going south to the beaches, etc. At this busy rest stop, there is no restaurant. No McDonalds, no Roy Rogers, no Sbarros.

There is, however, an enormous liquor store.

A liquor store. In the middle of an interstate.

Ah, yes, the "New Hampshire Advantage", pretending to fund state government on smkes, Jack Daniels, and $30 scratch tickets!

17. Interesting map.....
If there were a way to count the drinks consumed by tourists, then I think Mexico's status would be raised considerably- Every time I go, damn near everybody has one of those "Yard of Margarita" glasses in their hands. In the same way, I'm sure Louisiana would be a great deal higher, too, considering Mardi Gras...

for the record, I am doing my part to keep Louisiana's number high! :toast:

Even in the United States, blacks consistently drink less than whites on average.

46. NU-UH MAN! Read the fine print...
The WHO's figures for a number of African countries include completely unsupported "estimates" for traditional near-beer-type beverages: high in volume, low (often very low) in alcohol. Consider the popular Chibuku ("The Beer Of Good Cheer"): it's a hearty .5% alcohol. In the US, that wouldn't even qualify as an alcoholic drink.

Several African countries (Uganda, Nigeria, Swaziland and Burundi) appear in the list in the top 30 positions of adult per capita consumption. This is because the calculations were based on FAO data which include fermented beverages and estimates of beer produced locally from sorghum, millet and other agricultural products.

http://www.who.int/entity/healthinfo/statistics/indadultalcoholconsumption/en/index.html

I'm afraid most of Africa probably isn't much of a drinker's paradise, except that you can get a LOT of Chibuku or palm wine (also weak stuff) for just pennies.

51. that may apply to most African countries, but as I said in my last post...
Uganda tops the world in liters of alcohol per capita. And that's been my only point all along, regardless of the sadly teetotaling proclivitiies of other African countries.

Most people in Canada live within 100 miles of the US border - the areas of the territories are so huge that the average comes right down.

43. Nope, same either way
It's consumption divided by number of people. Doesn't matter if the people are all in one place, or spread out.

If 10 people drink 20 liters, the "drunk number" is 2, no matter where they are.

Ireland - No comment.
