Students protesting for cheaper birth control "So students don't have to make a choice between their
birth control and their cell phone bill or their birth control and their gym membership"

ALBUQUERQUE - University of New Mexico students are worried the federal deficit is going to cause a boom in unwanted pregnancies.

UNM is now feeling the affects of the Deficit Reduction Act passed in 2005 whose funding cuts reduce money used by universities to subsidize birth control.

The price of birth control on campuses and family planning clinics has more than doubled. Today students at UNM encouraged their peers to call and ask lawmakers to cosponsor a bill that would return the funding for birth control.

"Birth control is probably the largest preventative measure of abortion and unwanted pregnancies, just because it's safe, it's affordable," UNM Molly Maguire-Marshall said. "Sometimes it's accessible, and we want to keep it that way.

1. Uh, give up the gym membership
Of course, that might result in reducing the need for birth control ...

2. Asshats, each and every one!
I would be in favor of using public funds to sterilize anyone who takes that position.

I weep for our future.

10. You'd better weep for the unplanned pregnancies and the
major issues and problems that would cause in a young persons life.

It would be much, much better for them to have birth control.

5. Well, do we really want anybody who thinks that's a real dilemma having a baby?
Birth control helps students stay in school to graduation. A lot of the ones who leave to have a baby never come back.

9. Good and I hope they win!!
The price has doubled and sometimes tripled due to the rethugs passing the
The Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 which went into effect this year, the
main purpose of the bill is to reduce growth in mandatory spending programs like
Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Birth control had been $5.00 per month
on most campuses and now it's hitting $40.00 a month and more.

The Battle Over Birth Control

A seemingly innocuous deficit reduction law has caused the price of birth control
to skyrocket, and students are the ones paying the price.

By Mary F. Novak, Dartmouth College
August 27, 2007

http://campusprogress.org/fieldreport/1892/the-battle-over-birth-control

drug companies sold certain prescription drugs at large discounts to colleges and other health care providers for a multitude of reasons. The drug companies didn’t have to calculate the discounts into the rebates they paid to states to participate in Medicaid. But now the drug companies have to pay more to the states to participate in Medicaid if they continue to sell drugs to colleges at a discount, thus reducing their incentive to sell discounted drugs (including birth control) to colleges—which means that, in the end, students are the ones who make up the difference.

Once the incentive was removed, things quickly changed for the worse. In late March the Associated Press reported that the prices of birth control pills at student health centers were doubling and tripling at campuses around the country.

11. Fuck 'em.
Gym is good.

Cell phones can be useful, but if they text message $100 worth of "Ho R U Doin', hawt stuff? I'm GR8." during class, then they ought to rethink things.

Condoms? Are posh balloon doggies in such hot demand?!

I can think of much better things to remain accessible than condoms. You know, worthless stuff such as food, water, tools to do jobs and for that I ain't includin' no condoms (which are useless if one's special buddy has sores around the mouth or other situations I will not adumbrate upon for obvious reasons)...
