Today's pet peeve: uncreative naming.
Now I'm not saying to give children made-up or, god forbid, creatively spelled names. (example: Amy is a nice enough name, if a bit boring. With a nice middle it'd be fine. Aymeee is stupid.) But the herd mentality where people go on name jags and all the sudden every class has five Madisons and four Tylers is getting on my nerves.

Reuse family names, or look in books, or get inspired by your favorite novel, but for pity's sake, don't name your kids whatever the latest trend is. Not only will you confuse their teachers, they'll grow up hating that their name sounds so dated. And don't name them after a drink, a car or a location! Lexus is not a name, we don't want to know what you were drinking when you conceived and we all know how Paris turned out.

Finally, do not name your child after an indian tribe of which you are not a member. You wouldn't name your kid Vandal or Viking or !Kung, so why on earth do you think Dakota or Cheyenne is a reasonable name for little baby McWhiteBread? Get your own culture.

62. I know a few different liberal Portland families with a "Nathaniel."
I think it's mainstream enough now that it doesn't necessarily have that fundy ring to it.

Also, I know that Noah is popular among many Jewish families, many of them liberal.

43. You know, I once got a paycheck written out to 'Ned Flanders'
I had to explain to my boss that they called me 'Ned Flanders' or 'Flanders' not because that was actually my last name, but because I shared a first name with a memorable cartoon character popular on TV, and looked sort of like him at the time.

She was mortified when I told her, and turned a bright shade of pink. I thought it was hilarious. I wish I could have kept the check. I would have framed it.

My pet peeve are when people name their kids nicknames - Bob instead of Robert, Chris instead of Christine (those aren't the best examples, but you get my drift).

Of course, my name is a nickname and there are always people who are startled that it's not my actual name.

At least name him Edward. You can always call him Ned!

36. I mourn the loss of ethnic names. Around here, we're losing all the good old
Italian and Polish names. The Irish names are long gone despite the predilection for everyone to name their daughters Caitlin or Erin. (I don't even want to discuss Shawn for Sean!) One name, Brigid, was very popular two generations ago. I think it fell out of favor among Irish-Americans because it became a synonym for a house maid, as in "My Brigid forgets to dust under the table"

49. As a corollary,
I really dislike nicknames as first names: Tom instead of Thomas, Mike instead of Michael, etc. My SIL named her son "Danny" Come on, people! :banghead:

she would totally name them "Chaos" and "Havoc".

Now, see, I think that would be awesome.

It'd look weird on business cards when they're 40 and in middle management, though.

Edited on Wed Nov-14-07 05:33 PM by MrCoffee
i worked my ass off for that name.

she told me if i said Agammemnon one more time she'd cut my heart out. she was chopping something in the kitchen at the time, and her tone of voice made me convinced that she'd do it.

I gave one a Russian name and one a Jewish name.

Is this okay, considering I'm neither Russian nor Jewish?

94. I really, really, really want to nominate this for the greatest page.
It is hilariously funny and everyone needs a good laugh.
When I was pregnant with my first son I bought one of those baby names books. They actually offered Cinderella and Guinevere as choices.
I don't recall if Lancelot was an option.

we kept a running tally of the names we saw in the newspaper birth announcements for 2 months before he was born. Any name used more than once got crossed off of the list. We wound up with Brendan Eric. :)

104. My parents deliberately chose "normal" names
for me and my late brother. My dad's first name is Lance, which I really like even if he doesn't dig it that much himself.

That said, if I ever have a son he'll be named Richard, after my brother. It's also my dad's middle name so it's a twofer! :D

111. trouble with unique names, the kid has to live with it.
quick examples
my 2 younger have more unusal names.

You go into tourist trap stores that always have cups,or plates or pencils with names on them.
He searches in vain-never finds his name. Pisses him off.
His name is Braden-he went thru an entire year with a teacher always calling him branden.

The younger Devon has a more common name-problem is-most of them are girls.

I guess life ain't easy for a boy named sue.
