Question re: married name ID for flying
Here's the deal. My niece-in-law is freaking out because tickets for Thanksgiving were purchased by Uncle Bob in with the last name of her husband, and her ID is under her maiden name, which is her lawful name.

She's afraid she'll get stuck somewhere, as she has four connecting flights total and an infant with her.

Will she have trouble with a ticket in Mary Jones (husband's last name) and ID in Mary Martin (lawful name)?

1. Tell her to bring her marriage license
That should alleviate security issues.

And then have her talk to "Uncle Bob" and explain her name situation to him. :)

2. Have Uncle Bob call and correct the ticket.
Problem solved. :)

3. What Leftymom said, but first have her call the airline.
It won't be the first time they've heard this problem. They may be willing to reissue the ticket with her surname on it without Uncle Bob getting involved. Otherwise, they can tell her how Uncle Bob can do it for her.

I wouldn't go to the airport with a ticket in the wrong name, marriage license or no. It's always better to get it resolved ahead of time and keep the Keystone Cops at the airport out of it.

4. turns out Uncle Bob is also a cheapskate
The plane has three legs coming and going from the West Coast to Chicago, and more than one airline involved. Damn. Couldn't pay for a direct flight!

Ports of call include Memphis and Phoenix, with a four hour layover in Memphis.

The airline told her to bring her marriage certificate, just as predicted above. No time to reissue and mail tickets, apparently.

5. sounds like a mess...
just of out of curiosity, if they are paper tickets, are they all on one book? Meaning did airline A issue a ticket for airline B? Or are there separate books for both airlines

6. Ouch.
Good luck to her getting through TSA during the holiday crunch.
Three legs to go only half way across the country? That's cheap!

8. Doesn't Uncle Bob realize what all that taking off and landing can do to a baby?
I'd rather stay home than deal with that, just to have to do it again a few days later.

9. Oh, the horror.
That makes me cringe just thinking about it. WITH A BABY?

Honestly, maybe money is short, but I'd rather stay home than do that.

10. Totally agree. I'd rather stay home or charge a nonstop ticket to my credit
card if I really wanted to go that bad. Considering how bad the airlines have been with delays this year, then add in a major holiday, and you've pretty much guaranteed that at least one of those flights is going to get screwed up and she's going to be stuck in some airport until the next morning. No thank you.

And now Baby has the sniffles. I think she ought to just stay home. It's just too too much.

15. Good Gad, yes.
Envision a howling child, up and down, times four, plus a four hour layover. Ye cats.

7. Tell her to be prepared for a major hassle. It all depends on who is checking her
in and who is manning security and what kind of mood they're in that day. I've known more than a few people who've had to deal with that and sometimes they've had no problems at all, sometimes it was a major headache. Even the same airline at the same airport can handle the situation differently on different days. Hopefully, with a little luck, everything will be fine. But given that there are so many different legs to her journey and it's a holiday weekend, she really has to prepare for the worst and she has every reason to be afraid. Because it's quite possible that *somebody* along the way is going to be grumpy about having to work on Thanksgiving weekend and they're going to take it out on her.

Personally, if I were her, I'd buy a new non-stop ticket myself. That's a lot of taking off and landing for an infant to handle in such a short amount of time. That can really affect their ears a lot and they scream bloody murder. Oy vey. Poor thing.

Edited on Thu Nov-15-07 01:26 AM by Mojorabbit
cause my drivers lisc is in my maiden name. Luckily the passport and my credit cards have both my maiden and married name. And yes it is a hassle. They will ask for lots of id.
