Gunman shoots three 'church ladies' in restaurant

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A gunman shot and wounded three women at a fast-food restaurant in an apparent anti-Christian tirade before fleeing Friday night, police said.

Witnesses told police the assailant was eating alone at the Wendy's restaurant at 7007 Lakeland Ave North when he began waving a handgun and shouting anti-Christian hate speech.

The man, described by witnesses as a liberal caucasian in his late 20s or early 30s, then fired six shots, police said, wounding three of four women at a nearby table, who were apparently the targets of his rage.

"We were talking about how great it would be when we get to heaven and could look like whoever we wanted," said Selma Twombley, 53, of Maple Grove, the only one of the four women at the table not injured. "I said, 'God, I'd have boobs like Salma Hayek,' and this bozo jumps up with a gun and screams, 'I'm sick of your fundie bull----. There's no such place as heaven, and you couldn't look like Salma even if there were. She's hot, and you're an old fundie prune.'"

After firing the six shots, witnesses said the man fled the restaurant, got into a cream-and-primer Yugo and drove east on 70th Avenue North at a high rate of speed.

The victims — Victoria Ossning, 59, of Brooklyn Park, Clarice Stewart, 56, of New Hope and Virginia Wade, 57, of Maple Grove — were taken to North Memorial Medical Center where they were treated and released for gunshot wounds to the hair.
