The BlueIris Semi-Nightly Poetry Break, 11/20/07
— from "Idea"

(LXI)

Since there's no help, come let us kiss and part;
Nay, I have done, you get no more of me,
And I am glad, yea glad with all my heart
That thus so cleanly I can free;
Shake hands forever, cancel all our vows,
And when we meet at any time again,
Be it not seen in either of our brows
That we one jot of former love retain.
Now at the last gasp of Love's latest breath,
When, his pulse failing, Passion speechless lies,
When Faith is kneeling by his bed of death,
And Innocence is closing up his eyes,
Now if thou wouldst, when all have given him over,
From death to life thou mightst him yet recover.

—Michael Drayton

4. I've always thought of this poem as one in which the speaker is basically saying,

"Alright, fine, so we're breaking up. I'm alright with that—I swear—let's do it fast and try not to get too emotional and agree to leave it at that, never re-unite, refuse to dwell. Yup. Sure. No feelings. ... But just so you know I still love you like crazy and if you change you're mind you can have me back in two seconds."

Ahem. Not like I've ever been in that place before or anything.

5. perhaps, however
I took it to mean...the freedom to love again, and the refusal to give up on love.
