The BlueIris Semi-Nightly Poetry Break, 11/23/07
Edited on Fri Nov-23-07 09:13 PM by BlueIris
"You Know What You Can Do with the Yale Younger Poets Series"

So you'll never be a younger poet.
Whose loss is that? People say
it's okay. You had to come to it
your own way. They don't know.
Always you knew the Muse in the raincoat
was shadowing you.
Wouldn't let up
not one day, not one year. You'd write
things on matchbooks like the Odyssey
in two lines or the number of a stray
lay. It was all the same, you'd lose 'em.
Good thing, too.
Or maybe Ms. Muse
took 'em as evidence. Your plea
was that John D. had done it better,
that Bill S. speared it. What you'd add
would be heaped with the remainders.
You tumbled into lies
like an angry child
growing up sloppy with beer and excuses,
looking for a mommy or a new romance.
Same thing, sí, carbón? Some of us
never get over our birth. Post-partum
can be a life-long occupation. It's useless though
to compare abuses,
whose is bigger.
When you lurched home through stale empty streets,
Jesus, she'd be there trailing you.
I don't know, man,
why you finally stopped yelling
for her to fuck off, get lost. Anyhow—
you got it—you're out there now
looking for her all the time.

—James Griffin

1. My dear BlueIris!
Oooh, nice!

I love the transitions in this one...

And that twist at the end!

Terrific!

Now that I'm writing poetry, I have a much better idea of what goes on in a poet's head!

Great choice...

Thank you...

3. Awwww, thanks, C-Peg.
I thought this might communicate something extra to the poets in the group.

2. That could have been written about Charles Bukowski
It reminds me of him anyway.

4. Finally, a thread worth clicking on. Thanks
Slim Pickens around here, today. Lounge seems to be in a chokehold.

6. No, thank you!
I was sleeping off Thanksgiving today, myself, so I missed the doldrums in the Lounge.

7. Sometimes
Tuesday wakes me up with
sometimes quite a noticeable shake
and I open one eye
and find myself
staring

I like Tuesday.

Tuesday, remembers me and speaks to me
even when I'm not listening.

Tuesday is beautiful and asks me
repeatedly
if I like

Tuesday?

sometimes
Tuesday wakes me up with
things that make me noticeably shake
and I open my eyes
and find myself
staring
at love

on Tuesday?

9. I walked to the corner wondering why
I
would

and thought back to a time
when

Love seemed to share my apartment
space
and Love seemed to take the place of

words that you said to me
offhandedly
yeah

love seemed to share my worries
again
and then

I would
walk to the corner wondering why
I
would

but remember
that you said
you could
again

I believe you?
I believe in you
again

10. My dear Perseid!
Both of your poems that you've just posted here tonight are so much better than anything I've labored over...

You are so damn good.

You should be out there, trying to get someone to publish your stuff.

Do you hear me?

I. Mean. It.

11. We want to walk always in the light
Edited on Sat Nov-24-07 12:46 AM by Perseid
but
the light doesn't always shine on me.
so

I
walk alone among myself and others
who
feel as I do

Don't you
sometimes
feel the same way
too?

we want to walk
always in the light
Shine on me
tonight

so
Where are we to go?
in the light
tomorrow?

12. Wintertime seemed to have eyes
that saw
who I am
without having to cry with
snowy eyes
I am, yet, I may not be?

Wintertime is not all xmas lights
and family
happiness
I guess
I saw
who I was
who I could be
through snowy eyes

I am, yet, I could be?

and family
means that much to me
that I saw
who I am
without having to cry with

eyes

13. Shadows walked across my walls
Edited on Sat Nov-24-07 01:11 AM by Perseid
silently

People tend to talk too much
incessantly

someone
walked silently into
my world
tonight

and showed some shadows
that caused me to feel
tonight
incredibly

quiet

someone
took my shadows

away from me.

16. well, I did the best I could
Edited on Sat Nov-24-07 01:44 AM by Perseid
Lyle Lovett loves me:

It's a sunny day in California
But that old sun it's shining on me right here at home
It's one of those days
When those great ideas they just seem to fall out on you
And they always fall the greatest when you're falling all alone
It makes for a good day for some serious reflection
And massive rationalization
For contemplating the future of the future
And the last of the past
And wondering if you could ever forgive me darling
All the trouble that I put to you
And if I could forget all those questions
That I never asked
And if I could forgive
The temporary weight gain due to excess water retention
I could forgive the rest too
It's just a fact of life
That no one cares to mention
She wasn't good
But she had good intentions

So the grass it grows
When the sun it shines
And my face it glows
When the woman's mine
And you say I'm a fool-around
Honey that may be true
But I'd sooner fool around
Than be a fool for a fool
And if I could forgive
The unadulterated adulterating apprehension
I could forgive the rest too
It's just a fact of life
That no one cares to mention
She wasn't good
But she had good intentions

So I'm twenty-six and rising
Still too young to live
But too low to go
I guess it's the process
Of learning to excess
All of those things
That you already know
And if I could forgive
The honey-I-swear-it-didn't-mean-a-thing-to-me
Attempt at abstention
I could forgive the rest too
It's just a fact of life
That no ones cares to mention
She wasn't good
But she had good intentions

17. Help me
I had a quiet moment
and
I tried and tried again
to see the way
that you see things
I had a quiet moment
and
thought through things
again

I tried to talk to you
yesterday, but, you wouldn't listen
to me again

I tried to speak to you in ways
that you would
understand, but

I had to live within myself again
I had a quiet moment
while thinking
about you
I tried to
speak to you
again
but found I
didn't understand

I had another
quiet moment

18. Does no one have a poetic frame of mind?
I guess not.

Very disappointed.
