Edited on Fri Nov-23-07 10:47 PM by Orrex
One of those four times was on our bed, and another was on our sofa. Once was on the window sill, and once was on the kitchen linoleum. That's it.

One cat or the other throws up at least three times a week, and with about 30% non-carpeted floor in our house, you'd think that random chance would come into play.

But no.

I'll give them one more week. After that, I'm luring them into an alcove with a cask of Amontillado and bricking them up, dammit.

1. Not to put too fine a point on it, is it throwing up or is it just hair balls?
Because you can get this gel stuff for the latter that will solve the problem.

2. No fine point at all; more like a viscous paste
And very closely resembling the kitty kibble that they'd eaten minutes before.

Occasionally one of the wretched beasts will make a noise like a rutting elephant seal and deposit a hairball in some hard-to-clean location, but that's a comparitive rarity.

6. It was the weirdest thing
We clearly heard it occurring in the next room, but we couldn't find it anywhere. It was about twenty minutes before the other cat hopped up behind the curtain and made distinct "burying it" motions, thereby revealing it to us.

Yikes!

5. We have wooden floors throughout the house, dotted with the few....
Edited on Fri Nov-23-07 10:43 PM by Robeson
...random rugs. They have NEVER thrown up on the wooden floors. They always hit the rugs. I think it's a cat thing.

7. And cat puke is one of the reasons we got a small, auxilliary dog.
All we have to holler is, "Lookee here, Cranston!" and voila! Better than a shop vac!

9. Have you had it checked out by a vet?
Edited on Sat Nov-24-07 01:26 AM by electricmonk
I had a cat that puked all the time and everyone was always telling me it was normal so I ignored it and just cleaned up after him. Then one weekend he looked really listless so I took him to the vet and found out he had intestinal cancer. After the fact I thought about it and the vomit did change right before he got really sick. Turned more watery and looked like coffee grounds in it.

Just something to keep an eye on.

Been over 2 months and I still miss the little bugger.

11. Some cats are barfers
but sometimes they have hairballs that they are not coughing up. Try giving the cats some Petromalt or Maltolatum. Bet it will help.

13. They could have gastrointestinal disease. Prednisone works wonders.
Please take them to the vet before you do away with them. They could be all inflamed. If the vet wants to do all sorts of tests like a sonogram and hundreds of $ of blood test say NO and just ask for something that will help the symptoms for now.

I had the same problem with a cat I was babysitting and the first vet pulled that crap but the second put her on prednisone and an antibiotic and she has been great.

14. Such a negative tone!
Why won't the liberal media report on the 364 days per year that your cats succeed in puking on the carpet?

15. My cats puke less now
I put the food in a single layer on a cookie sheet. They can't inhale it and then puke it up.

Might be worth a try, once the vet rules out any medical cause.

16. Nice post, Edgar
A common cure for this type of vomitous behavior can be simply to change their diet to a different cat food. Try some that claim theirs is more easily digestable. If that doesn't work, good luck leading the little pukes into the cellar ;-)

18. I think you should try different food too
One of my cats tends to be a puker. There are some brands of food that he has never barfed up so I always go back to them. One brand he has never barfed (at least not yet): Organix by Castor & Pollux.

20. My cat used to puke regularly, too
Then I switched him over to Science Diet and in the last 3 or 4 months, he's puked once. I don't miss that hacking sound at all. :)

22. sensitive kitty tummies
A common cure for this type of vomitous behavior can be simply to change their diet to a different cat food

I have three cats and one of three cannot tolerate any form of beef, even if it's beef and chicken combined. I stopped serving them beef and she stopped barfing.

I think cats just have sensitive tummies. From the sounds of the stories on this thread, a little adjustment with the diet and you could be home free.
